Chicago punk label Red Scare Industries recently released the Red Scare Industries: 20 Years of Dreaming and Scheming compilation to celebrate its 20th anniversary, including new songs by The Menzingers, Laura Jane Grace (The Sidekicks cover), The Falcon, Cobra Skulls, Dead To Me, Nothington, No Trigger, Sludgeworth, The Bollweevils, The Lippies, and more. Cobra Skulls also made a video for their contribution, and that makes its premiere in this post.
“This song has been kicking around for a few years and I felt like it harkened back to the early Sitting Army days of Cobra Skulls, which was our first album on Red Scare,” singer/bassist Devin Peralta tells us of “You Know I Know.” “The lyrics are simple, straightforward, calling someone out for being a liar, basically.”
“The video takes place in an old, abandoned Foster’s Freeze off the I-5 in the Central Valley of California. I’m sure many touring bands have seen it when they stopped for gas or food. I grew up going there and it’s really just a place out of nostalgia in my childhood in the ’90s, but many have recently closed. I live on the opposite side of the valley from the location and on my way out I came up with a simple idea of a guy waiting for a burger from joker of a cook (also me) and now when I watch the finished cut I feel like I’m playing a guy talking to his inner demons, or like there’s a McFight Club thing going on.”
The song is Cobra Skulls’ first new track in 12 years, and it finds them leaning into a sweet, power-poppy side without abandoning their usual punk edge. It’s a pretty addictive track, and the video is as entertaining as Devin makes it sound. Check it out below.
