The past couple episodes of The Late Show with Stephen Colbert have been pretty great ones for musical guests making their late night TV debuts. Last night (7/15), he had Bikini Kill, 27 years after they broke up, performing “Rebel Girl,” the punk classic they released 31 years ago. The timeless song still sounds as fresh and powerful today as it did in the ’90s, and if Colbert just became someone’s introduction to the band, it’d be easy to see it becoming the kind of life-altering, radicalizing experience that so many of us have had from discovering the band one way or another. On Colbert‘s previous episode, he hosted the late night television debut of our latest digital magazine cover star, Jessica Pratt. She performed “Life Is,” the excellent opening track and lead single from her excellent new album Here in the Pitch, and like she has been on tour, the longtime-solo-artist was joined by a multi-piece band. It’s a treat to get to see Jessica perform her music in this fully fleshed-out way, and she sounded fantastic. Watch that below too.
Bikini Kill are gearing up to take their show on the road beginning in August, and they’ve got two upcoming NYC shows: Brooklyn Paramount on September 7 & 8 with Birthday Girl on night one and Sweeping Promises on night two. All dates are listed below.
Jessica Pratt begins the next North American leg of her tour in Minneapolis this Thursday (7/18), and she also has two NYC shows: July 24 & 25 at Bowery Ballroom with June McDoom on night one and @ on night two. She’ll be back in the area to play Jersey City’s White Eagle Hall on September 21 with Otto Benson. All of her dates are listed below as well.
