Back in October, The Twilight Sad released their first new music in seven years, “Waiting for the Phone Call,” featuring their old friend and tourmate Robert Smith of The Cure on guitar. They’ve now announced it’s from their first new album in seven years, It’s The Long Goodbye, due out on March 27 via Rock Actions. It follows the illness and death of vocalist and lyricist James Graham’s mother, and he says the album “had to contain every element of emotion I was feeling,” adding, “In the past I’ve used a lot of metaphors within my lyrics. With this, there’s not as much. The record is heavily influenced by my mental health, grief and loss, and the need to be strong in positions where you’re not feeling it. It’s a very human story, I think – this is just my version of it. I feel that everybody goes through something like this. Everybody loses somebody. Everybody questions life.”
It’s The Long Goodbye was produced by the band’s Andy MacFarlane, with additional production from Andy Savours. David Jeans (Arab Strap) plays drums, Alex Mackay (Mogwai) plays bass, and Smith also contributes to two more songs, “Dead Flowers” and “Back to Fourteen.” See the cover art and tracklist, and hear another new single, “Designed to Lose,” below.
The Twilight Sad will support The Cure on tour in June and July, and they also have spring headlining shows, all in Europe and the UK. See all dates below.
