The The have shared the video for “Cognitive Dissident,” the first single from Ensoulment, the band’s first album in nearly 25 years. For it, Matt Johnson reteamed with director Tim Pope, whose credits include almost all of The The’s original videos, all of The Cure’s best videos, and the film The Crow: City of Angels.
“Cognitive Dissident” makes great use of old-fashioned in-camera effects, including projection by collage artist Vicki Bennett (People Like Us) and photographer Peter Knight. “It’s always a pleasure to work with my dear friends,” says Johnson. “Our times working together are not only very creative, but also full of joyful mischief.”

Ensoulment will be out September 6, and The The will be on tour this fall including a stop at NYC’s Beacon Theatre on October 17.
