Norway’s Onsloow recently announced that they signed to Tiny Engines for the release of their sophomore album, Full Speed Anywhere Else, which arrives on October 25 (pre-order). It’s their first with new vocalist Helene Brunæs (of Lille Venn), who replaces original vocalist Johanne Rimul, and it also features contributions from Truls (Lukestar) on vocals, drummer Eirik Kirkemyr (Dråpe, Flight Mode), Gjermund Jappeé on lap steel (Youth Pictures of Florence Henderson, The Formative Years), Ivar Bowitz (Cold Mailman) on synth/keys, and multi-instrumentalist and producer Marius Ergo on guitars and synth. They put out lead single “Taxi” last month, and we’re now premiering second single “Brakes.”
“With ‘Brakes’ we wanted to step things up,” the band says. “It’s a more intense track, with more drive and energy. There’s a definite nod to that late ’90s indie rock and emocore vibe we love, but we’ve put our own twist on it. Lyrically, ‘Brakes’ is about looking back on a relationship and struggling to remember how it felt in those intense moments. It’s a mix of frustration and nostalgia, but with a lot of energy behind it. We’ve tried to balance that emotional depth with the kind of punchy, upbeat sound that gets you moving.”
The ’90s indie and emo vibes are indeed there, and I’d also add that I get some Alvvays vibes from this. It’s a cool song, and you can check it out below.
