“So yeah this is the first time this song has been heard by human beings in a concert hall,” Pulp frontman Jarvis Cocker told the crowd at Toronto venue History on Tuesday night. “Let’s see how it goes, this is ‘My Sex.'” A slinky number, “My Sex” has Jarvis in sexy whispering mode, dropping lines like “My sex is neither here nor there / My sex is neither him nor her.” Watch video of Pulp playing it below.
This was the second show of Pulp’s first North American tour in 12 years, and the second night in a row they played a brand new song. “When I say ‘new,’ I don’t mean last year or whatever. This is going to be the first time this song has ever been played in public. Ever,” Jarvis had said on Sunday in Chicago, introducing “Spike Island.”
Pulp have also been playing a few other new songs over the last year since they began playing live again, including “A Sunset,” co-written by former Pulp member Richard Hawley, which they debuted in Helsinki’s Flow Festival in August. It begs the question: Do Pulp have a new album on the way?
Signs point to yes. In August, Jarvis was spotted going into/out of a studio in London’s Walthamstow neighborhood. He posed for a picture that ended up in the Walthamstow Resident News and politician Stella Creasy – the Walthamstow Labour and Coop MP – posted it on her Instagram, which included some text, saying Jarvis told the picture-taker that they were indeed back in the studio.
There’s been no official word from Jarvis or any of the band, but it’s exciting. Pulp’s last album was 2001’s We Love Life, which was produced by the late Scott Walker.
