Mount Kimbie have always been pretty unpidgeonholable; the electronic duo have long had rock elements in their music, and with their fourth album, The Sunset Violent, they’ve fully transformed into an arty indie rock band where guitars are just as prominent as synthesizers. 1. Devo – “Gut Feeling”
Urgent, strange and catchy – a hard line to walk.
2. Polyrock – “Your Dragging Feet”
Completely flat in the best way possible.
3. Lush – “De-Luxe”
A really optimistic piece of music.
4. The Fall – “Paintwork”
A universe of ideas folding in on itself. Brilliant lyrics and god tier repetition.
5. Guided by Voices – “Game of Pricks”
Got to respect a song that just starts like this. No intro, just starts.
6. Land of Talk – “Quarry Hymns”
People give MOR music a hard time but there’s an incredible skill and beauty in writing music this dry.
7. The The – “Soul Mining”
The part that comes in at 3:00 is why synthesizers were invented.
8. Sonic Youth – “Reena”
Been trying to rip this off for years and this is the closest we’ve got yet.
9. Hana Vu – “Public Storage”
Brilliant song writing and unapologetically earnest. Two good things to aim for.
10. Alex Cameron – “Step Dad”
A genius at work. Always trying to catch up to Alex.
