While Screaming Females are no more, Marissa Paternoster is staying busy with Noun and now drummer Jarrett Dougherty launched his own new project, 34 Trolley. His upcoming debut EP Relaxation has Brittany Luna of Philly ska band Catbite on lead vocals, bassist Cristian Adams (Push Ups) and vibraphone player Victor Vieira-Branco, and other guests, and it makes a clear departure from all of those musicians’ other bands. Jarrett’s goal was to channel the early ’80s NYC funk-punk / mutant disco era, citing bands like ESG, Liquid Liquid, Tom Tom Club, and Dinosaur L as core influences.
“34 Trolley is an idea I’ve had brewing for a long time,” he says. “I love early 1980s NYC party records. While the rest of the world had declared disco ‘dead,’ NYC still loved to dance. Punks were trying to figure out where to go musically as the 70s came to an end. Hip Hop had made its way downtown. Experimental art freaks partied alongside jazz musicians. Some amazing records came out of that melting pot. With 34 Trolley I tried to evoke that sound.”
Due out October 4 as the first release on Jarrett’s Feel The Four Records, Relaxation also features Marissa Paternoster playing guitar on the title track, hand-claps on “Coming For You?” by Jarrett, Brittany, and Catbite’s Tim Hildebrand, a horn section on “Coming For You?” (Bryan Rogers, Frank Rein, Koof Ibi), and guitar on “Go Ahead” from Vacation’s John Hoffman, who also recorded and mixed the EP. “Coming For You?” is out now, and it sounds like it could’ve been a lost gem from the era that this band was inspired by.
