Mannequin Pussy had a huge year, releasing their excellent new album I Got Heaven, which has deservedly been showing up on lots of year end lists, in March, and doing a ton of touring (not to mention appearing on the cover of the first issue of the BrooklynVegan digital magazine). We’ve been asking artists about their favorite music of the year, and Mannequin Pussy guitarist Maxine and drummer Kaleen both told us about some albums and songs they loved (one of which didn’t actually come out this year). Read their lists, and their commentary, below.
Singer Marisa Dabice also told The FADER that her favorite song of the year is Amyl and the Sniffers‘ “Jerkin’,” and said, “Not that many artists could take, ‘you’re a dumb c*nt / you’re an asshole,’ and turn it into a melodic ear worm that plays over and over in your head, but Amyl and the Sniffers can.” Her favorite album that she discovered this year, however, is a much older album: Branching Out by the ’70s rock band Willow.

If you don’t like this record you’re probably no fun. It’s fun.
Charli XCX – Brat
Duhhhh. Charli is the coolest. She has been for her entire career. She serves so much attitude. She wrangles the most insane/brilliant production. Most people would have no idea how to tackle and handle the instrumentals that she absolutely bodies flawlessly. (A.G. Cook is one of my favorite producers of all time).
Rolando Simmons – Terrestrial Ultra-Doula
I’ve been a fan of Rolando Simmons for a few years, all the while, knowing nothing about the person in the least bit. He jumps between styles of electronic so fluidly. It’s IDM but with a very playful and human touch. It’s got aspects of ambient music and acid that I love and constantly seek.

Sabrina Carpenter – Short n’ Sweet
What I love about this album, besides the undeniable hooks, is the humor that is snuck into it – it’s refreshing for music to be super good but not take itself too seriously.
Chappell Roan – “Naked in Manhattan”
I stan a lesbian pop star as a lesbian and this song just perfectly encapsulates the longing of wanting to be with another woman – plus the pre-chorus is iconic.
Knocked Loose – You Won’t Go Before You’re Supposed To
Heavy perfection – from lyrical content to riffs to sequencing, this album fucking rules.
Mannequin Pussy close out this year in Australia, New Zealand, and Japan, and in 2025 they’ll be on the road with Militarie Gun on their way to Boston’s Something in the Way fest, including a Jersey City, NJ Show at White Eagle Hall on February 1. See all dates below.
