Lush have announced a deluxe 35th anniversary edition of Gala which will be out November 14 via 4AD. The compilation was North America’s official introduction to the London shoegazers, collecting their first three UK-only EPS — 1989’s Scar and 1990’s Sweetness and Light and Mad Love — plus a cover of ABBA’s “Hey Hey Helen” originally released on a benefit album, and a remixed version of “Scarlet” by Cocteau Twins’ Robin Guthrie.
This will be the first time Gala has been available as a standalone release since its original 1990 release, and it’s been newly remastered with faithful reproduction of the artwork by v23 (Vaughan Oliver and Chris Bigg), and also includes a new biography written by Jenny Hval. It’s available in a variety of formats, including a vinyl box with reproductions of the EPs, plus a 7″ of the two stray songs, and standard single LP/CD editions. There are also bundles with t-shirts (including a reproduction of one this writer still owns but is faded and falling apart).
Pre-order the single LP edition in the BV shop and check out artwork and tracklist below.
Lush’s Mad Love came in at #2 on our list of The Best Shoegaze EPs of the early 1990s.
In other news, Lush’s Miki Berenyi will be on tour with her current band, the Miki Berenyi 3, in October and The Raincoats’ Gina Birch will be on all dates. That tour hits Brooklyn’s Music Hall of Williamsburg on October 11.
