King Gizzard’s Cook Craig preps new album as Pipe-eye (listen to “Lords Of Lithium”)

Pipe-eye, the solo project of King Gizzard’s Cook Craig, will release his fourth album Pipe-defy on October 18 via p(doom) records. He made it with his KG bandmates Joe Walker, who produced and mixed, and Michael Cavanagh (drums). “I intentionally wanted to go for a much more ‘hi-fi’ sound for this album, which Joey nailed,” Cook says. “It was definitely a departure from previous Pip-eye sh*t which was always on the ‘lo-fi’ side.”

Cook also says there’s a strong synth-funk element to the new album. “At around the time that I was starting to write songs for the album, my mum gave me a bunch of old CDs from my early teens that I hadn’t listened to in ages. There was heaps of Grandmaster Flash, Herbie Hancock, Zapp, Stevie Wonder and other stuff like that. When I kept writing songs they kinda just started sounding like that… so I guess it kinda just kick started an old obsession I had for that style of music.”

You can hear that funky, synthy element on the album’s first single “Lords of Lithium” — check out the video below.

Cook is currently on the road with King Gizzard through mid-September and then they’ll be back in November for more shows. All dates are here.
