Kim Deal shares solo single “Coast” recorded by Steve Albini

The BreedersKim Deal has released a new solo single, a breezy horn-inflected song titled “Coast.” It was recorded with the late Steve Albini at his Electrical Audio studios in Chicago and it features her twin sister, Kelley, on guitar, with Lindsay Glover and Breeders alum Mando Lopez as the rhythm sections, and horns by Chicago marching band Mucca Pazza.

The song was inspired by being at the wedding of her friend Mike Montgomery (of O. Ring) and watching the reception band play Jimmy Buffett’s “Margaritaville,” as well as a summer Kim spent on Nantucket in 2000. Kim notes the later was not an ideal situation: “I hate the sun, beach and watersports.” She sings, “Oh all hold up and abandon plans for the good times / Where forgotten roads take lost lives to beautiful kids on the coast.”

No word on if this is the first single from a solo album, which would be Deal’s first. Stay tuned and listen to “Coast” below.

Kim and Kelley and the rest of The Breeders have more dates opening for Olivia Rodrigo in Los Angeles in August; they also opened her NYC shows in April.
