Joe Pernice of The Pernice Brothers and Scud Mountain Boys has announced a new solo album ,Sunny, I Was Wrong, which will be out April 3 via New West. The album was recorded live in the studio with a backing band of Jim Creeggan (Barenaked Ladies), Mike Belitsky (The Sadies), Mike Evin, and Mike McKenzie. It also features contributions from Aimee Mann, Teenage Fanclub‘s Norman Blake, Jimmy Webb, and Rodney Crowell. Warren Zanes (Deliver Me From Nowhere: The Making of Bruce Springsteen’s Nebraska) wrote the liner notes.
“It was always just me and other people, but in this case there’s almost none of those other people,” Joe says of recording under his own name. “My brother Bob sings one vocal and Patrick Berkery plays one drum track. They’re the only two left who I was playing with regularly. It felt like it was time to move on.”
The first single from the album is the very pretty “The Black and the Blue.” Says Joe, “This is one of those songs that came to me so completely and quickly that it was almost like I was watching someone else write it. At first I thought the chorus chord change was too simple. Then I said aloud, ‘Don’t be a dope. Have you heard ‘Roadrunner?’ So I let the songwriting run its course. When it was done, I thought there was a pretty catchy song there.” Check out the lyric video below.
