Jimmy Eat World seemed like they were on the verge of a followup to 2019’s Surviving when the now-unsigned band dropped two back-to-back singles in 2022–the Bleed American-esque singalong anthem (and recent setlist staple) “Something Loud” and the Clarity-esque slow-burner “Place Your Debts”–but no other new music came out in the three years since. Now they’re back once again with a new single, “Failure,” and it’s another very good one. The fuzzed-out guitars and relaxed pace make it kinda sound like Jimmy Eat World’s take on Blue Album-era Weezer, though the song may actually be named after the ’90s rock band that it shares a title with. Failure singer Ken Andrews mixed Jimmy Eat World’s last two albums, and there’s a video on his YouTube page of him breaking down the mix to this song the same year that Surviving was released.
UPDATE: “Failure,” which was indeed recorded during the Surviving sessions, is from a new EP, Something(s) Loud, due out on February 14 via Exotic Location Recordings. It also has the vinyl debuts of “Something Loud” and “Place Your Debts,” a cover of Crooked Fingers’ “Call to Love” (featuring Best Coast’s Bethany Cosentino), an acoustic version of “Something Loud,” and a TW Walsh remix of “Place Your Bets.”
“By 2021, it felt like distancing restrictions were finally easing and we could get back on the road,” Jim Adkins says. “Our Surviving album had barely been released before we were performing live again and reconnecting with fans. Coming out of the pandemic, it didn’t feel right to tour without offering something more, so we took the chance to share a few more tracks we’d been working on. At the time, it seemed like listeners were gravitating toward playlists rather than full albums, so we decided to meet them where they were.”
