Jessica Boudreaux (Summer Cannibals) announces new album ‘The Faster I Run,’ shares “Back Then”

Summer Cannibals broke up in 2023, but now band leader Jessica Boudreaux has announced a solo album, The Faster I Run, due July 19 via her own Pet Club label. Jessica wrote, performed, produced and recorded the album herself at her Pet Club Studio, and it features drums by Ricardo Lagamasino (Lucy Dacus, Mal Blum) and mixing by Hop Along/Algernon Cadwallader guitarist Joe Reinhart. The album also follows Jessica being diagnosed with breast cancer in November 2020. She was in remission by the summer of 2023, and the experience left her with a “renewed excitement about life and expression,” she says. “There was a fire under my ass, and then I kind of accidentally wrote an album.”

“I know a lot more about myself now than I did when I was with Summer Cannibals and it was exciting to write because I suddenly have access to all these different parts of myself that I didn’t before,” she continues. “Every song was a necessary part of healing, it’s genuinely the most that I have leaned on music to work through things. The whole record reflects on my past through an entirely new lens.”

The announcement comes with new single “Back Then,” an incisive indie rock song that Jessica’s new bio says “pays tribute to a late friend while lamenting her younger self’s mistakes and miscommunications.” Listen and watch the Karlee Boon-directed video, and check out the previously-released “Be Somebody Else,” below.
