Donna Jean Godchaux, who sang with The Grateful Dead through most of the 1970s, died after “a lengthy struggle with cancer,” according to her family. She was 78.
“It is with heavy hearts that we mourn the loss of Donna Jean Godchaux,” begins a statement on The Grateful Dead’s official Facebook. “Her unmistakable voice and radiant spirit touched the lives of countless fans and immeasurably enriched the Grateful Dead family. Her contributions will forever remain part of the tapestry that continues to be woven. We send our deepest condolences to her loved ones and ask for privacy for her family during this time.”
In addition to the many Grateful Dead tracks she sang on, including “Eyes of the World” and “Playing in the Band,” Godchaux also sand on Percy Sledge’s “When a Man Loves a Woman,” Elvis’ “Suspicious Minds,” and more.
Though she left The Grateful Dead in 1979, she sang with members of the band over the years, including a few Dead & Company performances.
