English Teacher‘s debut album, This Could Be Texas, has won the 2024 Mercury Prize. The award that recognizes the best British album of the year and comes with $25,000 was given out tonight at a gala ceremony in London. “We just thought we’d make a band,” singer Lily Fontaine told the crowd of peers, somewhat in shock. “What do we do now?”
This Could Be Texas was somewhat of a surprise winner with Chari XCX’s Brat favored to win, and the competition also included Beth Gibbons’ Lives Outgrown, Nia Archives’ Silence is Loud, The Last Dinner Party’s Prelude to Ecstasy, Corinne Bailey Rae’s Black Rainbows, and CMAT’s Crazymad for Me.
