Boston Celtic punk heroes Dropkick Murphys have announced their 13th album, For The People, due out digitally on July 4 via the band’s own Dummy Luck Music and Play It Again Sam, with an LP/CD release featuring five bonus tracks arriving October 10. The album comes during a year that Dropkick Murphys have been especially outspoken about Donald Trump and Elon Musk, and the album’s lead single “Who’ll Stand With Us?” is a working-class protest anthem that takes aim at the oligarchic forces that Trump, Musk, and their ilk embody. It’s a rousing, powerful song that finds the Murphys at their most urgent, as you can hear for yourself below.
“We’ve always had the same message and haven’t been afraid to speak out about what’s important to us. But for me now, I think about my kids’ future, and the next generation,” vocalist Ken Casey said of the new album. “That could be anything from speaking out against injustices, or just simply making sure you take the time to tell the people close to you how important they are to you.”
“Many of these songs are about the issues that do harm to regular people,” he adds. “Life can be cruel, and I don’t want to side with the people that vote for cruelty, that vote against free school lunches for kids, and vote against workers’ rights, and enable corporate greed in the growing wealth divide. So if the point is to have a heart and help people, where do those characteristics exist with those that side with the billionaires and the corporations over the worker and the child?”
The album features appearances by Billy Bragg (on a cover of Ewan MacColl’s “School Days Over”), Irish folk-metal band The Scratch (on “Longshot” and “One Last Goodbye ‘Tribute To Shane,” the latter of which is a tribute to the late Pogues singer Shane MacGowan), Irish folk group The Mary Wallopers, and former Dropkick Murphys singer Al Barr. The album also includes an ode to Pennywise guitarist Fletcher Dragge (“The Big Man”), a song written about Ken Casey’s father passing away when Ken was just 8 years old (“Streelights”), and a tribute to the grandfather who raised him (“Chesterfields And Aftershave”).
Going along with the causes that the Dropkick Murphys are fighting for, they’re performing at DC’s Unite for Veterans, Unite for America rally on June 6 (the anniversary of D-Day), and Ken Casey recently visited Ukraine for humanitarian aid.
Later this summer, Dropkick Murphys will embark on a co-headlining tour with Bad Religion, including shows at NYC’s Rooftop at Pier 17 on August 9, Asbury Park’s Stone Pony Summer Stage on August 13, and Atlantic City’s Ovation Hall at Ocean Casino Resort on August 15. All dates are listed below.
