Dr. Dog have announced their first album in six years. It’s self-titled, produced by guitarist Scott McMicken, and it began its life during a five-day stint in a Pennsylvania cabin, where the band recorded live to tape with “no rehearsal and no overdubs.” “For this record there was an emphasis on creating something very soulful and live-feeling, which meant starting with all of us looking each other in the eye and connecting to the music,” Scott says. “The idea was, ‘Let’s be loose, let’s not overthink.’ The more you can let go of that fear of being imperfect, the more you open yourself up to deeper expression.”
The band came out with almost two dozen songs during the cabin sessions, and then the members went home and added in new things individually, before finishing up the album at their studio in Philly. It was then mixed by Matt Ross-Spang (Jason Isbell, Margo Price, etc), and it’s now set to come out on July 19 via We Buy Gold Records (pre-order).
The album includes recent single “Still Can’t Believe,” as well as the just-released “Talk Is Cheap,” a song written by bassist Toby Leaman who says it’s “a song about my wife and how much I rely on her, how she’s always there for me. It’s funny because I’m not a big love-song guy, but everything I wrote on this album is for her.” Check out the song and its Wyndham Garnett-directed video below.
