Mush, the Chicago emo band with members of Dowsing, Annabel, Kittyhawk, Pet Symmetry, and more (not to be confused with the UK indie rock band of the same name), are gearing up to release their new album Mush With Benefits on March 1 via Evan Weiss’ Storm Chasers LTD label. They recently released “I Was Confused” and “Live Laugh Mush,” and we’re now premiering third single “Going Dutch” and its video.
The song is classic Midwest-style emo/punk–mathy riffs, catchy yelpy hooks, boundless energy, the works–and, talking about the video, vocalist Erik Czaja says, “Essentially what you will see in the video is that these pictures we took are animated 3D photos of us going to ‘The Freeze’ a recently sold ice cream landmark in Logan Square in Chicago. The song has call outs to where Andy (Hendricks, our drummer and member of Annabel) used to live around the corner. Video wise the song is about hanging out with your friends and getting a treat, the place (the Freeze) you go to is closed and you make your own fun out of it, which Mush is all about. Lyric wise the song is just an ode to love in a playful way because yes, as a touring musician every dollar counts.”
Guitarist Jinno Redovan adds, “The Nishika 3-D N8000 is a quadrascopic (four lenses) plastic camera first produced in 1989. It takes 4 instantaneous half-frame images that can be overlayed via a central point to create a moving effect. We didn’t know how much film we were going to need so in order to save on cost, we opted to bulk load the film. We purchased a 400ft roll of cinema film (Kodak Vision 3 500T), loaded them on reusable cartridges and developed each roll ourselves.”
