Canadian band HORSEBATH make what I’d call heartland psychedelia; their sound is warm, a little twangy, a little soulful, anthemic and familiar, but there’s also a groovy sense of wide-eyed wonder, and a love of the cinematic. The group, whose members hail from all over Canada but are based out of Nova Scotia, will release their debut album, Another Farewell, which will be out February 7 via Strolling Bones Records.
“We wanted to take an ego-less, music-first approach that features as many musical genres and influences as possible,” says the band’s Etienne Beausoleil. “I don’t think it can be categorized as a specific musical genre, but more as a feeling—of adventure, of the road, of beauty and heartbreak.”
The new single is the gorgeous, widescreen “In the Shade” which really spotlight’s HORSEBATH’s musical scope. “‘In the Shade’ is a psychedelic question of oneself,” says Daniel Connelly. “It was written with Keast [Mutter] sitting in one bedroom and Etienne in the other, both playing away over a few days until the arrangement seemed to form through the walls. Pulling from characteristics of Buffalo Springfield and The Band, it invites listeners into a world where emotions linger like shadows, leaving an impression long after the music fades.”
