Late-’90s/early-’00s NYC band CALLA are back and have released their first new music in 17 years. “Pick Your Battles” opens with a big guitar/keyboard hook that might have you thinking CALLA have gone pop, in an indie rock kind of way, but then the band’s signature unsettling, off-kilter undercurrent rears its head in the verse. “When every second counts, pick your battles,” they sing. “Pick Your Battles” is a very promising first taste of what CALLA (Aurelio Valle, Wayne B. Magruder, Peter Gannon) say will be a new album, their first since 2007’s Strength In Numbers. Let’s hope there are shows, too. Stay tuned.
