Bruce Springsteen, who helped campaign for Kamala Harris and performed at a Harris rally in Georgia last month, opened his Toronto show last night (11/6) with “Long Walk Home,” which he called “a fighting prayer for my country” in the wake of Donald Trump‘s win. Bruce originally wrote the song in the George W. Bush era, and he told The New York Times in 2007, “In that particular song a guy comes back to his town and recognizes nothing and is recognized by nothing.”
“The singer in ‘Long Walk Home,’ that’s his experience. His world has changed,” Bruce continued. “The things that he thought he knew, the people who he thought he knew, whose ideals he had something in common with, are like strangers. The world that he knew feels totally alien. I think that’s what’s happened in this country in the past six years.”
The second song Bruce performed last night was “Land of Hope and Dreams,” which he wrote to help instill hope in the American people after the 2008 recession. Watch video of his two opening songs from last night below.
In a recent campaign video for Harris, Bruce said, “This election is about a group of folks who want to fundamentally undermine our American way of life. Donald Trump does not understand this country, its history, or what it means to be deeply American.”
“I want a President who reveres the Constitution, who wants to protect and guide our great democracy, who believes in the rule of law and the peaceful transfer of power, who will fight for women’s rights and a woman’s right to choose, and who wants to create a middle-class economy that serves all our citizens.”
