Bob Dylan is out on his ongoing “Rough and Rowdy Ways” tour through early December, which this year includes seven NYC-area dates at different venues. In previous years he’s done multi-show runs at Beacon Theatre, but for 2023 he added a single night at the venue on Thursday (11/16) after announcing shows at Port Chester’s Capitol Theatre, Brooklyn’s Kings Theatre, and Newark’s New Jersey Performing Arts Center. He’s been requiring attendees to lock their phones and cameras in Yondr pouches at these shows, but a recording of the whole night has surfaced on YouTube, and you can listen to that below.
Dylan hasn’t been varying setlists much this outing, but he has been including city-relevant covers at some shows, and he began Thursday night with a partial cover of Billy Joel‘s “New York State of Mind.” After that, most of the night pulled from 2020’s Rough and Rowdy Ways, including “Black Rider, “Crossing the Rubicon,” “False Prophet,” “Goodbye Jimmy Reed,” “I Contain Multitudes,” “My Own Version of You,” and more. He also included a few other songs from throughout his discography – see his setlist below.
Dylan didn’t speak much between songs at Beacon Theatre, but as Showbiz 411 and the Dylan.FM Podcast point out, he did address Rolling Stone magazine founder Jann Wenner, who was removed from the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame board earlier this year after making widely criticized comments about Black and female musicians, towards the end of the night. “All right, like to say hello to Jann Wenner who’s in the house,” Dylan said. “Jann Wenner, surely everybody’s heard of him. Anyway, he just got booted out of the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame – and we don’t think that’s right, we’re trying to get him back in.”
