Taylor Swift, Bon Iver, Michael Stipe, Jason Isbell, Eminem, Beyoncé, Willie Nelson, Bruce Springsteen, and The National have all either endorsed Kamala Harris or appeared or performed at her rallies, and two members of Bikini Kill have now said they will also be voting for the current Vice President. In an Instagram post captioned “my thoughts on the election,” Kathleen Hanna wrote, “I’ve been thinking about this election a lot and I’m fucking livid at the way the Biden administration has supported and funded the genocide in Gaza.” She continued:
At the same time we have a much smaller chance to supply aid and achieve a ceasefire if Trump gets elected. I also want to vote against mass deportation, trans existence being erased, women dying in parking lots, book banning, the end of any steps towards equality, a psycho having the nuclear codes, a loss of all environmental protections, protesters being murdered by cops, and a white supremacist dictator running the United States. The list of what we will lose goes on.
@janayathefuture said it best: “You are not voting for or against a genocide in this election. You are voting for who we are going to fight while we continue to resist genocide post this election. A vote is a strategy, not an endorsement.” I’m voting for Kamala Harris and I hope you’re voting too.
In the replies, Tobi Vail wrote:
I agree with you 100% on this. Netanyahu wants Trump to win. The uncommitted movement is asking us to vote to block Trump. On Friday, progressive Arab and Muslim leaders in Arizona put out a statement in favor of Harris over Trump noting that when he was last president he moved the embassy to Jerusalem after receiving a large donation from Sheldon Adelson who asked him to do so. This directly led to where we are now. He just accepted a large donation from Miriam Adelson and has made it clear if elected he will prioritize “getting the job done”. In my view there is a small but real chance Harris will change course on Palestine. There is no question Trump will be much worse for Palestine and on every other issue. As for third party or a protest vote – personally I believe there is more than one legitimate position and I understand we can’t expect people whose family members are being massacred and assassinated by an apartheid state to vote for someone who is not willing to invite tnem to the table. But if we are a movement it makes sense to follow what the uncommitted are asking us to do: pleas vote to block Trump. I hope Harris wins and is able to achieve meaningful reform to a deeply flawed and oppressive system. The alternative – an openly racist convicted rapist – is not an option.
Bikini Kill wrapped up their most recent tour, which included a pair of NYC shows at Brooklyn Paramount, in mid-September. See pictures from the first of those below.
Arnold Schwarzenegger is also among those who’ve endored Kamala recently; “I will always be an American before I am a Republican,” he wrote on social media. “That’s why, this week, I am voting for Kamala Harris and Tim Walz.”
