Beyoncé has made history by winning two Grammy awards in the country category. She’s the first Black woman to win Best Country Album and the first to win a country Grammy in 50 years. She also finally won Album of the Year for the first time in her career.
Best Country Album was introduced by Taylor Swift (who didn’t take home any of the awards she was nominated for tonight), and she beat out Chris Stapleton, Kacey Musgraves, Lainey Wilson, and Post Malone; and she also took home the Best Country Duo/Group Performance award for her Miley Cyrus collaboration “II Most Wanted.” She did not, however, win Best Country Solo Performance (Chris Stapleton’s “It Takes A Woman” did) or Best Country Song (that was Kacey Musgraves’ “The Architect”).
During her acceptance speech for Best Country Album, she thanked “all the incredible country artists that accepted this album” and said “I think sometimes genre is a code word to keep us in our place as artists, and I just want to encourage people to do what they’re passionate about, and stay persistent.” Watch her acceptance speech below.
Beyoncé was also up for Record and Song of the Year, but lost both to Kendrick Lamar’s “Not Like Us.” She was also nominated for Best Pop Solo Performance, Best Pop Duo/Group Performance, Best Melodic Rap Performance, and Best Americana Performance. She led this year in nominations, with 11, and this year’s noms make her the most nominated artist in Grammy history.
Beyoncé also teased her Cowboy Carter Tour shortly before the Grammys, and then finally announced it after her big wins.
