So many artists, so many songs, so little time. Each week we review a handful of new albums (of all genres), round up even more new music that we’d call “indie,” and talk about what metal is coming out. AZCHIKE – “LOVE YO WEAPONS”
Fresh off appearing on Kendrick Lamar’s new album GNX, West Coast rapper AzChike releases his own new single, “Love Yo Weapons.”

SHYGIRL – “F*ME” (ft. YSEULT)
Fresh off opening Charli XCX and Troye Sivan’s Sweat Tour and appearing on Charli’x “365” remix, UK experimental hip hop/pop/electronic artist Shygirl has announced a new EP, Club Shy Room 2, due February 14 via Because Music. Its first single is the thumping raunch of “F*ME,” produced by Mura Masa and Oscar Scheller and featuring French artist Yseult.

ROC MARCIANO & THE ALCHEMIST – “CHOPSTICK”
Underground rap lifers Roc Marciano and The Alchemist just announced The Skeleton Key, a followup to their beloved 2022 collaborative album The Elephant Man’s Bones (one of our favorites of that year), and it comes out next week (December 13). The first single is “Chopstick,” which finds the duo’s post-boom bap vibes sounding as moody and ominous as ever.

DROP NINETEENS – “SHANNON WAVES”
US shoegaze vets Drop Nineteens lost album 1991 in February and here’s another song from it. “Shannon Waves” is decidedly groovy but with lots of hazy guitars.

MONOBLOC – “TAKE ME”
Monobloc, who just opened for Interpol at Brooklyn Steel, are back with this new single to close out their year. “Musically, ‘Take Me’ was written around the time we were exploring the whole Phil Spector’s Wall of Sound method—massive sounding songs that aren’t just drenched in reverb but more so well placed illusion. We wanted a song for a room we’re not yet big enough to play. A goal post. Lyrically, I wanted a confession from’someone knowingly drinking the Kool-Aid: ‘Take me where you want me. I want to be your fool.’”

HAMILTON LEITHAUSER – “THIS SIDE OF THE ISLAND”
With The Walkmen back in hibernation, frontman Hamilton Leithauser is back to his solo career. “‘This Side of the Island’ is a song about disillusionment, acceptance, and resolve.” Hamilton says. “The foundation of the far lower east side of Manhattan where I used to live was actually constructed out of garbage from the 1600’s all the way up to the 1970’s—a decent metaphor for the fundamentally-flawed relationship I was in when I lived there; and more broadly, for the modern collective identity of the United States. In the last decade, I think our country has more publicly and flagrantly revealed its true colors—an ugly side that was always there, but has now transformed our mainstream character. But there are still great people, great ideas, and great accomplishments all around us, and it is important not to lose sight of that. Sometimes when I see what I consider to be things barreling in the wrong direction, I feel totally helpless. But I am an optimist, and while I might not have any grand solutions (yet!), no matter what happens, as long as I’m breathing, I can still sing ‘I just want you to love me the way I love you.’ I don’t know if that’s a lot or a little, but I do know it’s true.”
