As you may have heard, Home Is Where are going country on their new album Hunting Season. That’s very intriguing for a band who at least at one point were a self-proclaimed fifth wave emo band, and to learn more about the change in sound, we reached out to Home Is Where to ask them about five major musical influences on it. In the video embedded below, singer Bea MacDonald says the two biggest musical influences on the album were Bob Dylan and Gram Parsons. “Many different Bob Dylan things, mainly the John Wesley Harding record,” she said, adding that that album inspired her to make a record “that you could grill to and also cry to… not cry, just feel something.” Bea also mentioned other Dylan albums, bootlegs, and live recordings, before moving onto Gram Parsons. Like Home Is Where, Gram was born in Florida, and Bea says, “He mixed country rock and roll, which is what we were doing–we wanted to mix punk and country and all kinds of different stuff and have it be poetry.”
Guitarist Tilley Komorny also added that in particular the first album by Gram Parsons’ band The Flying Burrito Brothers, 1969’s The Gilded Palace of Sin, was a major influence. She also cited the guitar work on Modest Mouse‘s The Lonesome Crowded West, the experimental aspects of Joan of Arc‘s How Memory Works, and the “spiritual energy” Animal Collective‘s freak-folky Campfire Songs as three other big inspirations. Hunting Season drops Friday (5/23) via Wax Bodega (order yours), and Home Is Where will support the album on a fall tour with opening sets from Forests, Short Fictions, Michael Cera Palin, Young Jesus, and RUGH, varying by date. That includes NJ’s Asbury Lanes on October 4 and NYC’s Bowery Ballroom on October 5, both with Forests and Short Fictions. All dates are listed below.
