So many artists, so many songs, so little time. Each week we review a handful of new albums (of all genres), round up even more new music that we’d call “indie,” and talk about what metal is coming out. We post music news, track premieres, and more all day. We update a playlist weekly of some of our current favorite tracks. Here’s a daily roundup with a bunch of interesting, newly released songs in one place.
KNOCKED LOOSE – “DON’T REACH FOR ME”
Knocked Loose have shared another genuinely awesome cut from their anticipated You Won’t Go Before You’re Supposed To, and vocalist Bryan Garris says this one is a takedown of “someone who tried their hardest to come into my life and mess with two out of the three closest people I have.” He also says it “may be the meanest song I’ve ever written.” Knocked Loose are also on the cover of the new issue of Revolver, and you can pick up that issue bundled with an exclusive vinyl variant here.

BETTER LOVERS – “THE FLOWERING”
Every Time I Die/Dillinger Escape Plan offshoot Better Lovers are wrapping up work on their debut album, and they’ve just shared another new song, one they’ve been playing live since the beginning. Vocalist Greg Puciato says, “Being able to play this live so many times before recording it really amplified that even more, really deepened the groove of it.”

IRON & WINE – “ANYONE’S GAME”
Callum Scott-Dyson directed the video for Iron & Wine’s new single “Anyone’s Game;” he says, “I used card cutouts in terms of the stop motion style, hand drawing the elements before cutting out and animating them. I wanted the video to explore themes of evolution, the cyclical nature of life, falling in love and break ups, as well as life sometimes feeling like a game of chance.” It’s from the band’s first album in seven years, Light Verse.

FROM INDIAN LAKES – “THE LINES”
From Indian Lakes have shared the second taste of their first album in five years, Head Void, a hypnotic indie rock song called “The Lines.”

BABEHOVEN – “ELLA’S FROM SOMEWHERE ELSE”
Babehoven’s new album Water’s Here In You is out later this month, and they’ve given us another early taste of it with poignant, folky new single “Ella’s From Somewhere Else.” “I wrote ‘Ella’s From Somewhere Else’ after seeing Ella O’Conner Williams of Squirrel Flower perform last winter,” Maya Bon says. “When I got home from the show, I found some quiet space alone, I lit a few candles and kept the lights off. I began thinking of all the places Ella takes me in her songs. She takes me to specific memories of my childhood, she takes me into the pain, just enough so that I can keep my grounding. Ella is also the name of my childhood dog who supported me through my teens, who I think of as a best friend. I began blending the two Ella’s in the song and they morphed to have a double meaning altogether. Not only is Ella of Squirrel Flower from somewhere else, but Ella the dog is from somewhere else. They both take me to that somewhere else place together.”

OTHER HALF – “LIFTED FINGERS” (ft. NADA SURF’S MATTHEW CAWS)
Norwich indie rock trio Other Half have announced a new album, Dark Ageism, due June 21 via Big Scary Monsters, and the first single features guest vocals by Matthew Caws of Nada Surf.

YAYA BEY – “ME AND ALL MY N****S”
We’re about a month away from neo-soul great Yaya Bey’s new album Ten Fold, and here’s another very appealing taste.

HOW TO DRESS WELL – “CRYPT SUSTAIN” & “NOTHINGPRAYER”
How To Dress Well has shared two more singles off his new album I Am Toward You. He says “Crypt Sustain” is “about the cryptic origin of all artmaking, about my art and my brother’s art work (which is all over the I Am Toward You work, including a font of his beautiful handwriting). It’s about Maria Torok’s work on crypts and ghosts in the intergenerational psyche and intergenerational transmission of trauma (again Tom? lol). It’s about the hegemony of realism and the desire to disavow the graphomaniac origins of art-making. It’s about non-verbal para-speech, Headbanger’s Ball, and the origin of graffitti 40,000 years ago and in the Lascaux Caves 20,000 years ago. It references Abraham and Torok, Bataille’s
“nothingprayer,” he says, is “a prayer in the Via Negativa, an attempt to orient myself towards God or that level of reality that lies beyond any attempted contact. Ἀπόφασις in Greek, I try to reveal that even attempting to name God through stripping away, through holding onto nothing, still leaves God infinitely far from me. I believe this teaches a great lesson about reality and about love: we must offer our prayer against possession as a model of connection. I Am Toward You is what the ‘nothingprayer’ says, fully recognizing the impossibly of naming God or possessing the beloved.”

Punk veterans TSOL and Keith Morris (Black Flag, Circle Jerks, OFF!) cover a Rocky Horror classic.

NAT HARVIE – “RED” FT. LOW’S ALAN SPARHAWK
Minneapolis-based singer-songwriter Nat Harvie’s new album, New Virginity, is out on June 7 via Boiled Records, and they’ve shared new single “Red,” which features Low’s Alan Sparhawk (guitar and vocals), Cole Pulice (saxophone), and Andrew Broder (production). “Alan and Cole’s contributions sound so tough and beautiful,” Harvie says. “I felt challenged and supported by my collaborators in the best way.”

COURTNEY BELL – “WORD II CONWAY” (ft. CONWAY THE MACHINE)
Detroit rapper Courtney Bell is releasing Microdose on May 17 via MNRK Urban, and its new single features Conway the Machine.

BAD BEAT – “NOT LIKE YOU” & “BIG MOUTH ON YOU”
Bad Beat are a band from Detroit who make no-frills, old school-style hardcore, and they do it well. They’ll release L.P. 2024 on May 10 via Triple B Records, and two tracks are out now.

MOUNT KIMBIE – “SHIPWRECK”
Mount Kimbie release their excellent new album The Sunset Violent on Friday and here’s one last early taste before you can consume the whole thing. It’s also one of the record’s best songs. “This was one of the earliest instrumental demos we made for The Sunset Violent and has always been a core part of the storyline of this album,” say the band. “We came up with the video concept with Duncan Loudon one evening and Jay Izzard did a great job directing and editing – all came together really quickly.”

PET SHOP BOYS – “DANCING STAR”
The second single from Pet Shop Boys’ upcoming 15th album was inspired by the life of Rudolf Nureyev, the ballet dancer who defected from the Soviet Union and became a global star. This one is very ’80s PSB, with old school orchestra stab samples. Nonetheless is out April 26

FINOM – “AS YOU ARE”
“‘As You Are’ is about getting lost in the creative imagination of childhood,” says Finom’s Simi Cunningham. “It’s about the profound and almost obsessive love you have for your first best friend.” Finom’s new Jeff Tweedy-produced album, Not God, is out May 24 via Joyful Noise.

IBIBIO SOUND MACHINE – “MAMA SAY”
“This track is simply about honoring women. The main chorus vocal is sung in pidgin: “Mama say make I honor am”—in other words, “Mother says I must honor her.” It is essentially about empowering and uplifting the women in our lives. The track plays musically upon the tension between the traditional and the modern; the arpeggios in the chorus were played on a Juno 60, and the west African vocal stylings of the verse provide a contrasting feel to these electronic elements.”

Katie Von Schleicher follows up 2023’s fantastic A Little Touch of Schleicher in the Night with this ethereal, woodwinds-filled new single.

+/- (Plus/Minus) have announced Further Afield, their first album in 10 years, which will be out May 31 via Ernest Jenning Record Co. The first single, “Borrowed Time,” is the kind of hyper-jangle indie rock that could’ve been out on Teenbeat Records in 1995.

A. SAVAGE – THE LOFT SESSIONS EP
Parquet Courts‘ A. Savage is back with a new EP, The Loft Sessions, which features covers of Johnny Paycheck‘s “It Won’t Be Long and I’ll Be Hating You,” Lavender Country‘s “I Can’t Shake the Stranger Out of You,” Kevin Ayers‘ “Oyster and the Flying Fish,” and a new version of A Savage original “Wild Horses” that first appeared on his 2017 solo album Thawing Dawn.

LES SAVY FAV – “LIMO SCENE”
Les Savy Fav will release OUI, LSF — their first album since 2010 — in May, and they’ve just shared a third single and video from it. “Limo Scene” has a nice gritty groove, and the video, directed by the band’s Syd Butler, is thick with creepy atmosphere.

PAIGE STARK (TASHAKI MIYAKI) – “GOOD AT LOVE”
Tashaki Miyaki’s Paige Stark will release her debut solo EP Good at Love, produced by Jon Brion, later this year and this is the title track.
