So many artists, so many songs, so little time. Each week we review a handful of new albums (of all genres), round up even more new music that we’d call “indie,” and talk about what metal is coming out. We post music news, track premieres, and more all day. We update a playlist weekly of some of our current favorite tracks. Here’s a daily roundup with a bunch of interesting, newly released songs in one place.
JAPANDROIDS – “ALL BETS ARE OFF”
Japandroids’ final album Fate & Alcohol comes out on October 18, and here’s one more single from it. This one’s got a more soaring, tender, atmospheric vibe and it kinda sounds a little like Jimmy Eat World.

RIVAL SCHOOLS – “YOU SHOULD HAVE HUNG OUT”
Rival Schools’ 2011 sophomore album Pedals is getting a deluxe reissue this week (9/20) via Run For Cover, and it includes three previously unreleased songs from the album’s sessions. Here’s one of those.

HIGH VIS – “DROP ME OUT”
High Vis have shared another song from their upcoming album Guided Tour. The band flirt with other styles (Britpop, baggy, dance music) but “Drop Me Out” is a straight-up ripper.

SUZANNE VEGA – “RATS”
Suzanne Vega has unveiled her first new song in eight years, “Rats.” “I was talking to Jimmy Hogarth, the producer of my 2007 album Beauty And Crime,” she says. “We were discussing who had seen the biggest rat. After that conversation, I kept reading about or hearing various rat stories, all of them true. I took careful note and set it all to music, inspired by the Ramones and Fontaines D.C.”

ELIAS RØNNENFELT (ICEAGE) – “WORM GREW A SPINE”
“Worm Grew a Spine” is in the rambling blues tradition, no choruses or even verses just a wordy spiel. Elias’ debut solo album is out in October.

THE KILLS – “HAPPIER THAN EVER” (BILLIE EILISH COVER)
The Kills announced a new EP, Happier Girls, due out September 20 via Domino. It features non-electric versions of a few songs from their 2023 album God Games, and a rendition of Billie Eilish’s “Happier Than Ever.” “It’s all Sirius XM’s fault,” Alison Mosshart says. “We were asked to do an acoustic session with them last year and they’d asked for a cover as part of the session. I’d always really dug ‘Happier Than Ever’ and found myself singing it around the house all the time. It seemed like a good choice, since I loved it and loved singing it. After that radio session hit the airwaves, Laurence Bell from Domino reached out to us enamored with our acoustic version of the song and asked us to do an electric recording. Here we were in London, recording a non-electric EP and what’s the first song on it? An electric cover of the acoustic cover we did… and the more electricity the better. Thank you Billie for writing such a brilliant song!”

THE VOIDZ – “7 HORSES”
There’s a nice loungey reggae undercurrent to “7 Horses,” the latest single from The Voidz’ upcoming album Like All Before You that’s out this Friday.

LAMBRINI GIRLS – “COMPANY CULTURE”
About their scathing new single “Company Culture,” UK duo Lambrini Girls say, “Tired of working twice as hard while white, middle-aged men get credit for your ideas? Afraid to report harassment? Constantly second-guessing to avoid conflict? If you’ve answered yes: you’re probably a woman or a queer person. If these challenges hold you back, it’s entirely your fault. A PLACE TO BURY STRANGERS – “BAD IDEA”
You know when you think “this is a bad idea” but you do it anyway and you were right? A Place to Bury Strangers’ new single sounds like the worst case scenario — in a good way of course. New APTBS album Synthesizer is out October 4.

HARMONY – “STEREO”
Harmony’s debut LP Gossip is out next month, and she’s given us another preview with pop banger “Stereo.”

PIXIES – “MOTOROLLER”
“This is one of those kinds of songs where there’s little threads you can follow and they take you somewhere. But they’re not required for the experience,” say Black Francis of the latest single from Pixies’ upcoming album The Night the Zombies Came. “You can just start fishing around in the lyrics, and maybe you won’t find exactly what the story is, but you’ll find a story related to the city of Berlin. So just have fun with the clues that are there.”

MY MORNING JACKET – “AREN’T WE ONE?”
My Morning Jacket’s Jim James and Bo Koster co-wrote their new single “Aren’t We One?” with Manchester Orchestra’s Andy Hull, and they’ve shared it on National Voter Registration Day to encourage people to register.

ORIGAMI ANGEL – “SIXTH CENTS (GET IT?) & “SECONDGRADEFOOFIGHT”
Shapeshifting emo band Origami Angel have shared a double video with two new songs off their upcoming album Feeling Not Found, and the video pays homage to videos by Green Day, Phoebe Bridgers, Modern Baseball, Taking Back Sunday, Smashing Pumpkins, and Foo Fighters.

THE ARMED – “NEW! CHRISTIANITY”
The Armed’s maximalist, sensory-overload new track “NEW! Christianity” is the first single off their new EP Everlasting Gaze, due out on October 18 via Sargent House. “‘NEW! Christianity’ was originally conceived as the first single for Perfect Saviors — but when it was apparent that we had too much material for a single LP, this track became more of a summary statement appropriate for the finale Side C record and epilogue to the Only Love / Ultrapop / Perfect Saviors trilogy,” Dan Greene says. “In regards to its name, it’s less about specific, actual religion as it is about the culture thirsting for an avatar for it. The moralization of the amoral. A more overt repudiation of the concept of the ‘Perfect Savior’ than a mere reflection on it.”

SPLIT CHAIN – “(RE)-EXTRACT” (ft. SOFTCULT)
UK band Split Chain have signed to Epitaph, and they followed their recent single “Haven” with “(Re)-Extract,” a shoegazy nu metal collaboration with Softcult that’ll probably appeal to fans of Deftones and Code Orange.

SEAN THOMPSON’S WEIRD EARS – “ROLL ON BUDDY”
Country singer/guitarist Sean Thompson has announced a new Sean Thompson’s Weird Ears album, Head In The Sand, due February 7 via Ears Over America/Missing Piece Records. Here’s the rollicking new single “Roll On Buddy.”

JAYE JAYLE – “HOPE FAITH COUNTY”
Jaye Jayle has released a stripped-back, solo, live-in-studio album A Blue Bird Cage. It’s only out on vinyl, but this haunting rendition of “Hope Faith County” is streaming.

CHRIS FARREN – “STATUE SONG”
Chris Farren has released an atmospheric indie power ballad called “Statue Song,” and it comes with the “Sees Challengers Once Remix” and a demo of the song, plus a demo of “Beneath the Weight.”

PEARL & THE OYSTERS – “TRIANGULAR GIRL”
Pearl & The Oysters’ new album Planet Pearl is out this Friday and here’s one last early taste. This “Triangular Girl” is “geometrically unfit to evolve in the curvilinear world surrounding her.”

MOGWAI – “GOD GETS YOU BACK”
Mogwai’s new single has an unlikely collaborator. Says the band’s Barry Burns: “I thought it needed some melody or vocals, but I couldn’t come up with the lyrics so I asked my 7-year-old daughter to make some up, and she did and I sang them.”

CUNNINGHAM BIRD – “CRYING IN THE NIGHT” & “CRYSTAL” (BUCKINGHAM NICKS COVERS)
Andrew Bird and Madison Cunningham announced Cunningham Bird, a full album reimagining of Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie NIcks’ 1973 album Buckingham Nicks, and shared the first two singles, which you can read more about here.

FATHER JOHN MISTY – “SCREAMLAND” FT ALAN SPARHAWK
It’s the sprawling new single from Father John Misty’s sixth album.

GREG MENDEZ – “FIRST TIME”
Greg Mendez signed to Dead Oceans and announced his first EP for the label, First Time/Alone, with a new single, “First Time.” Read more about it here.

MATT BERRY – “I GOTTA LIMIT” FT KITTY LIV
You may know him from What We Do in the Shadows but Matt Berry is also an insanely talented musician and will release new album Heard Noises in January.

EUROS CHILDS (TEENAGE FANCLUB / GORKY’S ZYGOTIC MYNCI) – “SEE-SAW”
Former Gorky’s Zygotic Mynci frontman and current Teenage Fanclub member Euros Childs will release new solo album Beehive Beach on October 25 via National Elf. The first single from the album is the lovely, pastoral “See-Saw.”

THE FLESHTONES – “THE CONSEQUENCES”
The originators and kings of Super Rock will release their latest platter of soulful garage rock in November. This is the first single.

PAPA M – “ODE TO MARK WHITE”
David Pajo (of Slint, the current Gang of Four lineup, and more) has announced his first Papa M album in six years, Ballads of Harry Houdini, and you can read more about this lead single here.
