So many artists, so many songs, so little time. Each week we review a handful of new albums (of all genres), round up even more new music that we’d call “indie,” and talk about what metal is coming out. We post music news, track premieres, and more all day. We update a playlist weekly of some of our current favorite tracks. Here’s a daily roundup with a bunch of interesting, newly released songs in one place.
BURIAL – “PHONEGLOW” & KODE9 – “EYES GO BLANK”
Burial and Hyperdub leader Kode9 have teamed up for a split single, streaming now and coming out as a 12″ this summer via Hyperdub. Burial offers up nine minutes of trademark haunting, pitched-up vocal samples and Kode9 delivers the chaotic breakbeats of “Eyes Go Blank.”

BEACH BUNNY – “VERTIGO”
Beach Bunny have shared their first new single since their 2022 album Emotional Creature. Lili Trifilio says, “People always ask me where’s the sad girl anthems but I’m on a journey of self awareness so ergo a bop about self sabotage, jealousy, and generally spiraling (classic) – I wrote this on an airplane in my head and tried to demo it in the bathroom very sneakily but airplane bathrooms are super loud so as to not forget how it went since the audio was trash I sang it in my head for the entire duration of a 4 hour flight.”

TINDERSTICKS – “NANCY”
Tindersticks’ new album Soft Tissue is out in September and here’s a second single from it that snakes on some underbelly. “Some say that there are only a few different types of songs,” says frontman Stuart Staples. “‘Nancy’ definitely falls in to the classic ’guy fucks up / begs for forgiveness’ bracket – but hopefully with a few surprises along the way. Like much of Soft Tissue, the musical spark of excitement came from the creation of the rhythm track – Earl Harvin gated, echoed and fused with a CR78. Dan McKinna’s bass and David Boulter’s organ arpeggios combining into a heavy sauce. Nice brass too.”

HORSE JUMPER OF LOVE – “SNOW ANGEL”
The latest single form Horse Jumper of Love’s new album Disaster Trick features Ella Williams of Squirrel Flower and MJ Lenderman. “A lot of my songs start with an image and then stream of consciousness takes over from there,” Dimitri Giannopolous says. “I had this idea of a snow angel melting in the sun. It stemmed from the first poem in Actual Air called ‘Snow.’ Through this piece, David Berman explores the idea of snow metaphorically and abstractly. He relates the outdoors sounding like a room when it’s snowing and snow angels being shot by a farmer, vulnerable and isolated… I wanted to tap into a feeling of being outside in the cold and wanting something.” Lance Bangs directed the accompanying video.

REDD KROSS – “I’LL TAKE YOUR WORD FOR IT”
Says Redd Kross’ Steven McDonald: “‘I’ll Take Your Word For It’ although based on real events it is not about any specific person. It’s an amalgamation of several types, that so-called friend that always seems to bring up the ex, or perhaps a working relationship that ended poorly despite your best and most earnest attempts at civility. ‘Are you my friend, are you my foe? I don’t know’…The video I suppose offers one possible antidote for this situation. When you’re contemplating telling your nemesis to take a hike, maybe it’s smarter to put on your best suit, matching bass, and matching band (if you’re as lucky as I am) and take a hike yourself. That’s what I did and it made me feel so much better.” Redd Kross’ new self-titled double album is out next week.

CARSON MCHONE – “(LYING HERE WITH) LINDA ON MY MIND” (CONWAY TWITTY COVER)
Carson McHone’s new covers EP, ODES, is out next month, and she’s shared another track from it, her rendition of Conway Twitty’s “(Lying Here With) Linda on My Mind.” “The idea to re-interpret this tune originally came from my old friend and bass player, and all ’round poet-rascal, Mitchell, who many years ago on a tour put the idea into my head of a punk rock version of Conway’s ‘Linda,'” she says. “It took me long enough, but it’s fitting that it came to be after falling in with some rock’n’rollers who grew up punks and at one point used to perform country music (to a T, if I do say so myself, and I’d like to think Mr. Twitty would agree…)—that would be Daniel Romano’s Outfit, of course. So Daniel and Ian and Tommy and I donned our leather jackets and channeled the Ramones and cut this punky version of Conway’s killer classic country tune ‘(Lying Here With) Linda on My Mind’ at our studio, Camera Varda. It is mere coincidence that we did a ‘Ramones-esque’ cover of a song about a woman named Linda…or is it? We had fun—I hope you do, too!”

BIG BOSS VETTE – “ICE ME”
Rising rapper Big Boss Vette has a bunch of addictive singles out, and the hook on “Ice Me” is another earworm.

DEER TICK – “SACROSANCT”
Deer Tick announced a new EP, Contractual Obligations, with 8 songs recorded during the sessions for their 2023 album Emotional Contracts. They’ve shared the first of those, “Sacrosanct,” which John McCauley says is “a song that we’ve cut and recut a few times over the years. We always felt like it was lacking something. Recording it with Dave Fridmann gave it the kick in the pants we all felt it needed.”

BLU – “LOST ANGEL” (prod. EVIDENCE)
Cultishly loved West Coast rapper Blu and Dilated Peoples veteran Evidence team up for a dose of hazy boom bap.

KISHI BASHI – “ICARUS IV”
Kishi Bashi’s new album Kantos comes out in August, and he’s shared another single from it, “Icarus IV,” and a 16-bit video. “This song always spoke to me visually of an epic journey,” he says. “And with my love of animation and video games, I decided to spin an alternate tale of Icarus, set in the a fantastical psycho-Greek world where it heralds the trials of the return of the prodigal son, Icarus, who has come back after abandoning his band to seek fame and fortune in a solo project. While the story may or may not be autobiographical, the feelings may be relatable to those who have left and those who have been left behind. I hired talented pixel art character animators and edited and animated this video. This can be seen as an extension of my Omoiyari ‘song film’ concept, where I believe the vision for the song extends beyond just the music and into the visual realm.”

WAND – “JJ”
Wand release their new album Vertigo on July 26 and they’ve just shared the second single from it. The very dreaming “JJ” comes with a video directed by Wonder Showzen co-creator Vernon Chatman with animation and art direction by lilfuchs.

JAMIE XX – “LIFE” FT. ROBYN
Jamie xx’s new album In Waves arrives in September, and he’s given us another early taste with “Life,” featuring Robyn. “I made this track pretty fast (for me) and I loved it from day one,” Jamie says. “When I first heard Robyn’s vocal it was at 6am after finishing playing at Pacha in Ibiza, it was the perfect moment. Robyn and I have spent time working together and hanging out for some years now, it’s always a joy and always inspiring, I’m so glad and grateful that she is a part of In Waves. Thank you Robyn for bringing this track to life!” Robyn adds, “I just want to see how ‘Life’ gets people dancing this summer. I can’t wait for that. Jamie is such a brilliant creator, I’m excited to be part of his album.”

WHY? – “G-DZILLAH G’DOLAH”
WHY? has shared another taste of upcoming album The Well I Fell Into, a whimsical song powered by prepared piano, upright bass, and a string section, whose titular character Yoni Wolf calls “the ultimate God shadow baddie.”

JPEGMAFIA – “DON’T RELY ON OTHER MEN”
JPEGMAFIA continues to tease a new album, and he’s shared a new track, “don’t rely on other men,” writing, “rest of the album soon!”

FUTURE TEENS – “DOUBLE DOWN”
Future Teens’ new single is an indie-punk trans joy anthem, and here’s what vocalist/guitarist Amy Hoffman says about it: “I’ve never written songs about my identity before now, despite Future Teens being so integral to me embracing myself as an out, visibly trans man. I grew up in the church in a small city in Missouri where I was ridiculed for not adhering to expectations of girlhood, and other kids’ parents speculated about my gender and sexuality long before I had any idea what those words meant. I protected myself by refusing to let anyone see it affect me – and burying it all until I couldn’t anymore. Double Down is the song about trans joy that I needed when I was a girl wondering why I couldn’t make myself feel like one, and I hope it can be a similar balm for anyone else that might need it.”

DAVID GILMOUR WITH ROMANY GILMOUR – “BETWEEN TWO POINTS” (MONTGOLFIER BROTHERS COVER)
David Gilmour teams with his daughter, Romany, for this cover of “Between Two Points” by mid-’00s indie band Montgolfier Brotehrs. It’s on David’s upcoming album Luck and Strange.

BOOTSY COLLINS – “ALBUM OF THE YEAR #1 FUNKATEER”
Former Parliament Funkadelic bassist Bootsy Collins has announced new album Album Of The Year #1 Funkateer which features contributions from Snoop Dogg, Dave Stewart, Wiz Khalifa, October London, Fantaazma, and more. Here’s the title track featuring Myra Washington and Bootdullivan.

Cold Cave have been sharing new singles regularly this year and they’ve just dropped the latest, an anthemic synthpop banger titled Hourglass.”

MEMORIALS – “ACCEPTABLE EXPERIENCE”
MEMORIALS, the duo of Verity Susman (Electrelane) and Matthew Simms (Wire, It Hugs Back), have signed to Fire Records and are working on their first album for the label. While no official word on the new album has been revealed, they have shared their first single for Fire, a baroque-psyche burner titled “Acceptable Experience” that falls somewhere between Broadcast and The Doors.

ED SCHRADER’S MUSIC BEAT – “DAYLIGHT COMMANDER”
Long-running Baltimore duo Ed Schrader’s Music Beat have announced a new album, Orchestra Hits, which will be out September 20. First single “Daylight Commander” takes an ’80s New Romantic approach with lots of drama.

LILACS & CHAMPAGNE – “EVIL HAS NO BOUNDARIES”
Lilacs & Champagne, the instrumental, sample-heavy duo of Grails members Alex Hall and Emil Amos, have announced their first new album in nine years. It’s titled Fantasy World and will be out July 19 via Temporary Residence Ltd. Where previous albums have dabbled in instrumental hip hop and trip-hop, Fantasy World explores sound collage, citing Negativland and Severed Heads as influences this time.

SHONALI – DRIVING NOWHERE”
Musician, comedian and actress Shonali, who you may remember from late-’90s/early-’00s indie rock band Ultrababyfat, has announced a new solo album, One Machine At A Time, which will be out July 26 via Little Lamb Recordings. The video for “Driving Nowhere” features Dave Hill.

AJ LEE & BLUE SUMMIT – “I CAN’T FIND YOU AT ALL” (ft. MOLLY TUTTLE)
California country/bluegrass band AJ Lee & Blue Summit’s new single is sort of a mini reunion of The Tuttles with AJ Lee, as Blue Summit includes Sullivan Tuttle on guitar and this song features Molly Tuttle and was written by her and Sullivan’s father Jack Tuttle. Read more about it here.
