So many artists, so many songs, so little time. Each week we review a handful of new albums (of all genres), round up even more new music that we’d call “indie,” and talk about what metal is coming out. We post music news, track premieres, and more all day. We update a playlist weekly of some of our current favorite tracks. Here’s a daily roundup with a bunch of interesting, newly released songs in one place.
MODERN NATURE – “SOURCE”
“Source was written in the aftermath of the 2024 UK riots, which were sparked by a campaign of misinformation aimed at asylum seekers,” says Jack Cooper of Modern Nature’s new single. “I found myself watching live streams of them unfolding on YouTube, despairing at what I was seeing but oddly gripped. These communities are like the one I grew up in. It’s easy to condemn them and of course their actions were appalling, yet amongst all that hate, you could see people desperate for community and collectivism. I wanted to write something about how I saw it and it turned into this strangely uplifting song in the vein of ‘You Can’t Always Get What You Want’ or the Beta Band’s ‘Dry The Rain’. I was going to send it to Liam Gallagher but then Oasis reformed.” MOdern Nature’s new album The Heat Warps is out August 29 via Bella Union.

BIG THIEF – “ALL NIGHT ALL DAY”
Big Thief have given us another early taste of their anticipated new album Double Infinity, the breezy “All Night All Day.”

GWENNO – “UTOPIA”
Gwenno’s fourth album Utopia is out Friday and just ahead of that she’s shared the title track. “I had been thinking a lot about Las Vegas again, and it was the city that I felt epitomised what the album was exploring,” says Gwenno. “There is an honesty to the place that I’ve always found significant, and it’s only now, so many years later that I can see the impact that my time there working and living has had on me…I was trying to convey the fragility and the beauty of femininity in a place which exploits it, as I had experienced first-hand.”

IVY – “FRAGILE PEOPLE”
Ivy’s Andy Chase said the title of “Fragile People” resonated “with Dominique and I deeply in the aftermath of losing Adam [Schlesinger]. This is one of the few songs that would constantly bring us to tears even as Bruce, Dominique and I were writing it.” Ivy’s new album, Traces of You, is out September 5.

POOR CREATURE (LANKUM, LANDLESS) – “BURY ME NOT”
Poor Creature, the Irish trio that includes Lankum’s Ruth Clinton and Cormac MacDiarmada and Landless’ John Dermody, will release their debut album All Smiles Tonight on Friday. They’ve got a unique blend of traditional Irish music and downtempo electronics that works really well.

BEN NICHOLS (LUCERO) – “IN THE HEART OF THE MOUNTAIN”
Ben Nichols of Lucero’s new solo album In the Heart of the Mountain is out later this month, and he’s unveiled the title track. “I’ve never before set out to write a song about mental health,” he says. “Although one could say all songwriting is about mental health in one way or another. The title track to the album, ‘In the Heart of the Mountain’ is a wife-appreciation song. My wife and I have been together for over ten years now and I realize how much she keeps me sane. We can often be our own worst enemies and having someone who keeps us from getting too wrapped up in the devils and demons of our own making is a truly wonderful thing.”

SPACEFACE – “EVERYTHING IS MONEY”
“’Everything Is Money’ is an anti-capitalist jam,” say LA dreampop band Spaceface of this new single. “Why the fuck does everything have to make money? In a world where you’re meant to translate art into loveless data, this song says ‘fuck you and fuck that.’ Someone told us it sounded like ‘Millions & Memes’’ disgruntled cousin — we’ll take it.”

DEBBY FRIDAY – “BET ON ME”
“Life can be so dizzy and it’s easy to spiral into living a reality that you don’t actually want,” Debby Friday says of her new breakbeat-driven banger. “This song is an ode to intuition and raw self-belief, to betting on yourself.” The Starrr Of The Queen Of Life is out August 1 via Sub Pop.

FLETCHER TUCKER – “TO LIGHT A FIRE” FT. PHIL ELVERUM & SPENCER OWEN
Drone-folk artist Fletcher tucker is releasing a new album, Kin, on August 15 via Gnome Life Records. New single “To Light a Fire” features contributions from Phil Elverum and Spencer Owen, and he says, “The first half of this song depicts a moment of real life high drama, where my wife and I were caught in a white-out blizzard in the Northern Sierra. We survived the night beside a giant bonfire—we did not know my wife was only a few weeks pregnant at the time. Several months later on the summer solstice our daughter was born, the second part of this song describes her birth from a mythic, ceremonial vantage. This song is exemplar of the ‘breathing instrument’ palette of Kin—featuring elder & bamboo flutes, pump organ, Swedish bagpipes, and Mellotron flute. The Mellotron flutterings (performed by Spencer Owen) draw inspiration from the modal hypnotics of Hildegard von Bingen; they form a call and response with Phil Elverum’s (Mount Eerie / the Microphones) anarchic percussive ‘clatter’, and together express Cosmic polarity.”

CHICKS ON SPEED – “SYNTHESIZE”
Says Chicks on Speed’s Alex Murray-Leslie: “With Synthesize, Chicks on Speed remix Ursula von der Leyen’s European vision of the New Bauhaus ‘Let’s build together the beautiful, sustainable, inclusive living places of the future’ through Francesca Albanese’s urgent global call for collective action to break the siege on Gaza, transforming together into a planetary strategy for degrowth, justice, and radical beauty – step by step, share and care.” This new single also drops in a tiny sample of New Order’s “Bizarre Love Triangle” and is on the group’s new album HEARandNOWtopia that’s out in October.

BAD COP BAD COP – “ALL TOGETHER NOW”
It was announced today that Hopeless Records is acquiring the Fat Wreck Chords catalog, and it was also announced that Bad Cop Bad Cop will release their new album Lighten Up on September 19 via Fat/Hopeless. The first single is the dubby punk song “All Together Now.”

Baltimore hardcore band End It have shared another ripper from their anticipated debut full-length album Wrong Side of Heaven.

LIP CRITIC – “SECOND LIFE” & “MIRROR MATCH”
Rising NYC industrial punks Lip Critic followed their great 2024 LP Hex Dealer with two chaotic new songs and an online pinball game.

RESTRAINING ORDER – “KNOW NOT”
Massachusetts punks Restraining Order have announced their third album, Future Fortune, and you can read more about lead single “Know Not” here.

ANAND WILDER – “BOG PEOPLE”
Yeasayer co-leader Anand Wilder announced his sophomore solo album, Psychic Lessons, along with the release of new single “Bog People.” Read about it here.

AGRICULTURE – “BODHIDHARMA”
LA ecstatic black metallers Agriculture have announced their sophomore album, The Spiritual Sound, and the first single is a 6+ minute, genre-blurring song named after the founder of Zen Buddhism. Read more about it here.

ROCKET – “WIDE AWAKE”
LA band Rocket just announced their debut album and with that shared this new single they say is “the perfect balance of all the elements of this record.” If you like ’90s alt-rock, this will be up your alley.

SLY AND THE FAMILY STONE – “I CAN’T TURN YOU LOOSE” (LIVE IN 1967)
Just a week before Sly Stone‘s death last month, it was announced that the earliest known Sly and The Family Stone recording would be released as a live album titled The First Family: Live at Winchester Cathedral 1967 on July 18 via High Moon Records. They’ve just shared “I Can’t Turn You Loose” which would end up on 1968’s Dance to the Music.
