Nathan Phillips will release Last Circle in a Slowdown, his new album as Big Bend, on September 13 via Shimmy-Disc. It was co-produced by Shahzad Ismaily. “This song went through several iterations,” Nathan says of “Wheeling,” the album’s first single which namechecks the WV city near where his grandmother was from. “At one point it drudged along at half tempo before a very late night when Shahzad was in and out of sleep at the drum set, where he came up with this propulsive brushed beat. Out of that subconscious land came a backbone that made the other instrumentation come alive. There were about two years of listening to the piano, bass and guitar parts without a decisive rhythm! My friend Craig and I were ecstatic sitting in the control room.”

LIAM BENZVI – “OTHER GUYS” FT. BLOOD ORANGE

Liam Benzvi of Strange Names releases his new solo album, …And His Splash Band, in September, and Dev Hynes of Blood Orange features on the new single. “Dev is one of my good friends,” Benzvi says, “and I already knew our voices sounded nice together, so having his vocals on the song added the most perfect texture, and I’m so beyond content with how it all came out.”

The opening track is “lead you on,” and Hannah says, “This song explores the power dynamic that comes from playing games with someone who’s playing games with you, and the delusion of thinking you hold power from meddling in the dark magic of manipulating a manipulator. In the end, no one holds power, no one wins.”
