So many artists, so many songs, so little time. Each week we review a handful of new albums (of all genres), round up even more new music that we’d call “indie,” and talk about what metal is coming out. We post music news, track premieres, and more all day. We update a playlist weekly of some of our current favorite tracks. Here’s a daily roundup with a bunch of interesting, newly released songs in one place.
SLEATER-KINNEY – “THIS TIME”
There’s a deluxe edition of Sleater-Kinney’s Little Rope out on November 1 featuring a bonus disc of extra songs. Say the band: “‘This Time’ was the last song we wrote for the record and the last to get cut once we decided we preferred the evenness and succinctness of ten songs. About a person reaching the limits of denial, ‘This Time’ exists on the thematic edges of Little Rope, an album wrestling with loss and its aftermath.”

MICHAEL KIWANUKA – “THE REST OF ME”
“We were trying to shoot for something that might have made it onto a Bill Withers album or a Sadé album,” says Michael Kiwanuka of “The Rest of Me” which is from his new album Small Changes that’s out November 15.

KELLY LEE OWENS – “BALLAD (IN THE END)”
Yes, this is a ballad but it’s a very Kelly Lee Owens ballad, owing just a touch to her love of Cocteau Twins (and written with Chemical Brothers’ Tom Rowlands). New album Dreamstate is out October 18.

ALLIE X – “BON VOYAGE”
Allie X announced a deluxe edition of her fantastic 2024 album Girl With No Face, due out on October 31 via Twin Music, and she’s shared one of the previously unreleased tracks from it, the smoldering “Bon Voyage.” “‘Bon Voyage’ is a song that marks a change in the weather and a change in me,” she says. “I can sense a new season coming and ‘Bon Voyage’ expresses a willingness to allow its arrival. Sometimes change can’t happen until we are ready for it.”

SINKANE – “K TOWN BOOGIE”
“I wrote K Town Boogie after my trip to Sudan in 2017,” Sinkane says of his new single. “It was a very eye-opening and inspiring trip. I got to meet so many amazing people, doing so much for the country, in spite of being controlled by an oppressive regime.
At the time, 75% of Sudan’s population was 24 years old and younger. These kids went on to overthrow Omar El-Bashir, the longest-running dictator in African history. Since then, life in Sudan went from being hopeful to absolute terror. A war between 2 power-hungry military leaders has led to the largest humanitarian crisis on Earth. Famine and death. As of 8 September 2024, 20,000+ people have been killed and 33,000 others injured. Over 7.7 million were internally displaced and more than 2.1 million others have fled the country as refugees. Many civilians in Darfur have been reported dead as part of the Masalit massacres. I’ve lost 2 cousins to this crisis. My entire mother’s side of my family has been displaced outside of Sudan. Almost every Sudanese person you ask will tell you the same thing.” Proceeds from “K Town Boogie” will be donated to the Madaniya 2024 Fundraiser/Sudan Solidarity Collective.

PIPE-EYE (KING GIZZARD’S COOK CRAIG) – “TRAVERTINE”
Pipe-eye, the solo project of King Gizzard’s Cook Craig, will release his fourth album on October 18 and here’s another taster. “This was the last song I finished on the album,” Craig says, “because it took heaps of time to get the flow right. I was constantly building on it and adding/taking away sections.”

LIGHTMAN & LIGHTMAN – “BETHLEHEM XL”
Romy & Sari Lightman, who used to perform as Tasseomancy and who were an integral part of Austra‘s band for a while, have launched a new project called Lightman & Lightman. Their debut EP, Sister Smile, will be out December 6. It features contribution from TOPS, Meg Duffy (Hand Habits), and Cola. This is the opening cut.

ASTRAL JETS (BLACK FLAG, SCREAMERS) – “FIRST THOUGHT” & “PUNISH OR BE DAMNED” (SCREAMERS COVER)
Astral Jets is a new band featuring Dez Cadena (Black Flag, Misfits, etc) and Paul Roessler (Screamers, 45 Grave, etc), who also played together in the ’80s SST band DC3, and the lineup is rounded out by all three members of LA trio Backbiter (guitarist Jonathan Hall, bassist Heath Seifert, and drummer Bob Lee, the former of two of whom also played in Angry Samoans at separate points). Their debut album First Thought is out now as a limited CD release and two songs are streaming, one of which is a Screamers cover.

PRIMAL CODE – “ANAPSID”
Primal Code are a death metal trio from Chicago (whose bassist Will Lindsay also played in Indian, Middian, Abigail Williams, and several other bands) that formed in 2021, and they just signed to Relapse for their debut album Opaque Fixation. Read more about the LP and lead single “Anapsid” here.
