Umbra Vitae, the death metal band fronted by Converge’s Jacob Bannon (that also features current and former members of The Red Chord, Twitching Tongues, Hatebreed, Uncle Acid, Job For A Cowboy, and more), have detailed their upcoming sophomore album Light of Death. It was recorded by Kurt Ballou and Zach Weeks, mastered by Brad Boatright, and it comes out June 7 via Deathwish (pre-order). First single “Belief Is Obsolete” is out now, and it’s a total rager.
“This song came from a demo I recorded at ye olde home studio although, as with all of the songs on this record, we managed to make it sound even more disgusting in the best possible way,” says guitarist Sean Martin (Twitching Tongues, Wear Your Wounds, ex-Hatebreed). “I like Swedish Death Metal and Thrash, can you tell? Big, mean, hairy end riff to carry you out.”
Jacob Bannon says, “Musically, ‘Belief Is Obsolete’ is signature Sean Martin Bay Area Thrash worship. The performances from all of us on this one are completely redlined from beginning to end. Lyrically I explore the idea that ‘belief’ in the traditional sense is obsolete in the modern age we live in. It is abused as a shield and weapon socially, politically, and spiritually, ultimately becoming a burden for all.”
Umbra Vitae also have three upcoming Northeast shows with The Hope Conspiracy (who are gearing up to release their first album in 18 years), including Brooklyn’s Meadows on June 8 with This Is Hell and Staticlone. All dates are listed below.
