Boston straightedge hardcore legends SSD‘s (aka SS Decontrol) 1982 debut LP The Kids Will Have Their Say has been out of print since its initial run of roughly 1900 copies sold out over 40 years ago, but it’s now finally getting a long-awaited vinyl reissue and coming to streaming services for the first time ever. Originally a split release between SSD’s own Xclaim! label and Dischord, the reissue is coming November 17 via archival hardcore label Trust Records, and we’ve got an exclusive transparent red vinyl variant limited to 350 and up for pre-order now.
The album has been remastered from the safety version of the original master tapes by Dan Johnson of Audio Achieving Services, and it includes a recreation of the original cover art by Bryan Ray Turcotte. They reportedly managed to clean the tapes, despite “extreme mold and water damage.” “It sounds better than I thought it could have sounded at this point,” says guitarist Al Barile via press release.
“We only did one pressing of 1,900 copies and then I shut it down after the first pressing,” said Barile. “Even back then within a couple of years if people wanted it they couldn’t get it, but I guess what surprises me is that people still want it. People on YouTube copy it all the time and put it up there and I never once complained to them about copyright violations or stuff like that.”
“When I heard about the kind of business model [Trust] were trying to do and how it had an archival twist to it, that really matched what I was trying to do because I was trying to find a permanent home [for it], so it wasn’t being bootlegged again or something I wouldn’t want to happen if I’m not around,” Barile continues. “They had the most compelling story when it came to matching what I was trying to do, so it seemed like a good fit.”
Along with the announcement comes a new Coan Buddy Nichols-directed video for “How Much Art,” featuring previously unseen photos and video footage of SSD. Check it out below.
