Slipknot warmed up for Sick New World on Saturday by playing a much more intimate show at Pioneertown, CA’s 850-capacity Pappy & Harriet’s on Thursday night (4/25). A cryptic Indio, CA billboard with their logo had teased “ONE NIGHT ONLY” and “LONG MAY YOU DIE,” and for fans who made it in, tickets were $9 and benefitted Joshua Tree No Kill Shelter and Boys & Girls Club of the Hi-Desert.
It was Slipknot’s first show of the year, and also their first show since parting ways with drummer Jay Weinberg in November. They didn’t confirm the identity of his replacement, but it was already widely speculated to be former Sepultura drummer Eloy Casagrande, and fans have pointed out that the masked drummer’s tattoos seem to confirm that.
As Revolver points out, addressing the crowd from the stage, frontman Corey Taylor told the crowd, “Tonight, it doesn’t matter you came from. It doesn’t matter when you were born. This year is 19 fucking’ 99, right here. We’re gonna play you some songs from beyond that year. But Goddammit, it all started in ’99, and it is starting again here tonight.”
True to Taylor’s word, they pulled largely from their 1999 self-titled album for the show, and also played songs from throughout their discography (but nothing from 2022’s The End, So Far, their most recent album).
