Kalamazoo, MI noise rock/post-hardcore vets God Bullies were initially around between 1986 and 1995, and they released four albums for Amphetamine Reptile and one for Alternative Tentacles, and gigged with the likes of Melvins, Helmet and Cows. After breaking up, vocalist “Father” Mike Hard went on to lead Thrall, Hand Over Head, and other bands, and now he re-activated God Bullies with a new lineup for their first album in 30 years, As Above, So Below. It’s good timing with the new Jesus Lizard album on the way as well, and new single/opening track “I Am Mighty” picks up right where God Bullies left off, bringing that classic AmRep sound right into the 2020s.
The album was made at Steve Albini’s Electrical Audio Studios with Sanford Parker co-producing, engineering, and mixing, and the band captured the same abrasive aesthetic they had back in the day. Of the new song, Father Hard says, “We have survived tidal waves, smallpox, and plagues. Earthquakes, tornados, hurricanes and lava flows. To all those who walk before me, in your presence I AM MIGHTY.” Listen and watch the video below.
