Envy have announced their eighth album, Eunoia, due October 11 via Temporary Residence Ltd (pre-order). It comes over 30 years into the band’s career, and first single “Beyond the Raindrops” finds the band navigating much different territory than the screamo that they’re best known for. It’s a dreamy, shoegazy song with no screaming at all, and it should come as no surprise that Envy are well-equipped to pull this kind of thing off. They’ve had melodic moments in the past, and “Beyond the Raindrops” is just as intense and moving as the band’s screamier songs.
“This was a new challenge for me,” says vocalist Tetsu Fukagawa. “I wrote the lyrics with a focus on sounds that fit the melody, rather than the meaning of the words. I think it ultimately gave envy a fresh impression.” About the album overall, guitarist Nobukata Kawa adds:
The concept of creating the album was to honestly face our own powerlessness. Searching for a little hope, and record the emotions gained from daily life in a diary-like manner. Even without explaining the songs, Tetsu’s lyrics were wonderful and added depth to the piece. It has been 6 years since the member line-up changed, and the good relationship of trust has been strongly reflected in the work.
