Indiana shoegazers Cloakroom have signed to Closed Casket Activities, following two albums on Relapse and two on Run For Cover before that, and they confirmed that a new album is coming in 2025, recorded with longtime collaborator Zac Montez. Title and release date are TBA, but they did just release its first single “Unbelonging,” and it goes in a different direction than the sludgy, slow-paced fare that Cloakroom are best known for. It’s upbeat and has an overt ’80s influence, or, as the band puts it, “It’s a pop song wielding 140 bpm of optimism that can fall apart and dishearten just as quickly as it captivates – Cloakroom meets Psychedelic Furs.”
The song comes with a video filmed during Cloakroom’s recent European tour, of which they say, “Similar to a Crowelian ceremonial dagger, all the lyrics to the new record were crafted under the cover of darkness, predominantly in a moving vehicle; predominantly leaving any number of border town bars. That’s why we chose to do a ‘found footage’ kind of delivery method for the video.” Check it out below.
Cloakroom are gearing up to support Every Time I Die/Dillinger Escape Plan offshoot Better Lovers on their fall tour, and that tour also includes Cloakroom’s labelmates Full of Hell (who also recently moved from Relapse to Closed Casket), along with Spy on all dates and a few December dates with Gouge Away. That includes a Brooklyn stop on November 17 at Warsaw, and Cloakroom also have a few upcoming headlining dates mixed in. All dates are listed below.
