Post-hardcore supergroup L.S. Dunes (members of My Chemical Romance, Thursday, Circa Survive, and Coheed & Cambria) have shared the third single from their upcoming sophomore album Violet, “Paper Tiger,” and it comes with a visualizer created by another post-hardcore veteran who I’m pretty sure has had a big influence on all of the L.S. Dunes’ members bands, Cedric Bixler-Zavala of At the Drive-In and The Mars Volta. It finds them branching out from their usual 2000s-style post-hardcore into slower alternative rock territory, and it suits them very well. Check it out below. Violet arrives 1/31 via Fantasy.
About this song, guitarist Frank Iero (also of MCR) said, “I think when I initially started writing the chord progression for this song I was originally writing it for myself, because it didn’t feel like an L.S. Dunes song to me, and if it was an L.S. Dunes song, it would most certainly be a departure from what we had done in the past. And then I started to think well, that’s really silly of me, why wouldn’t Dunes be able to do something like this? If I want listeners to not put us in a box and believe we can do anything then I’m going to have to believe it first. So I reworked the progression a little bit and sent it over. Hearing it now, I can’t believe I ever doubted it. Paper Tigers was always an L.S. Dunes song. Together we can do anything.”
Drummer Tucker Rule (also of Thursday) added, “This is the song I listen to most on our record. Yes, I listen to my own record because I think it’s that good. This song scratches all the itches… sludgy tempo, heavy ballad, mega riffs, soaring vocals and lots of space to play cool drums. This would be one of the songs I’d take to the deserted island with me. This is my favorite song on the record!”
L.S. Dunes are wrapping up a tour supporting Rise Against in Del Mar, CA tonight (11/22), and they’ve got UK/Europe dates coming up in February. Next fall, they’ll play Coheed’s S.S. Neverender cruise. All dates here.
In other news from the L.S. Dunes universe, Coheed announced a new album this week, My Chemical Romance entirely sold out their Black Parade stadium tour (though tickets are of course all over the secondary market), and Thursday (who play the Coheed cruise and the NJ date of MCR’s tour) have a tour supporting Silverstein in early 2025.
And speaking of Cedric, The Mars Volta are touring with Deftones and Fleshwater next year.
