Daft Punk officially broke up in 2021 and haven’t played a concert, not counting on Fortnite, since 2007. It’s been nearly as long since the duo’s Thomas Bangalter has done a DJ gig — 16 years — but he made a rare public appearance behind the ones and twos on Saturday night in Paris as part of a massive two-day 20th anniversary celebration of French label Because Music at Centre Pompidou.
Bangalter played a b2b2b2b set with Fred again.., Ed Banger co-founder Pedro Winter (aka Busy P) and Erol Alkan, and the set included Daft Punk’s “Rollin and Scratchin” and “Digital Love,” The Chemical Brothers’ “Galvanize,” the Soulwax remix of Justice’s “Phantom Pt II,” Bangalter’s edit of DJ Medhi’s “Signatune,” part of Jonny Greenwood’s “One Battle After Another” score and more. This was also the first time Bangalter has DJ’d without the Daft Punk mask in 24 years. Watch video of part of the set and listen to the whole thing below.
Because Beaubourg featured a lineup that included Busy P, Erol Alkan, Christine and the Queens, Sebastien Tellier, Shygirl, Erol Alkan, 2 Many DJs, and many more, as well as immersive events like Justice’s IRIS, Shay’s Jolie Garce Club, Shygirl’s Alias: A Sensory Exploration, and Bangalter’s CAMERA / MAN.
