The Hidden Cameras are back with their first album in nearly a decade. It’s titled Bronto, and it will be out September 12 via Mixed Up Records. Joel Gibb, who is the band for all intents and purposes these days, recorded the album “over the last few years in Munich with Nicolas Sierig and mixed in either Munich or in Berlin.” The album also has Gibb eschewing The Hidden Cameras’ signature folky indiepop sound for ’80s style synthpop, but Owen Pallett is back, keeping a through-line to the past with his gorgeous string arrangements.
The new direction fits in perfectly with Gibb’s songwriting style, and the bubbling backing on first single “Undertow” would’ve fit right in between Visage, Pet Shop Boys, Depeche Mode and The Human League in the mid-’80s. Pet Shop Boys actually remixed recent Hidden Cameras single “How do you love?” and Vince Clarke (Erasure, Depeche Mode) has remixed “Undertow” (not out yet).
