Among the many new television series set to premiere this year is This Town, a period piece drama set against England’s late-’70s 2-Tone ska scene. The series is from Peaky Blinders‘ creator Steven Knight and is partially based on his own adolescence. Set in Coventry (home of The Specials) and Birmingham (home of The Beat and Peaky Blinders), This Town follows a fictional band trying to make it and be part of the scene. Here’s the official synopsis from the BBC:
Set in a world of family ties, teenage kicks and the exhilarating music of a generation, This Town tells the story of a band’s formation against a backdrop of violence, capturing how creative genius can emerge from a time of madness.
This Town, presumably named after The Specials’ “Ghost Town” (It’s the first two words), stars Michelle Dockery (Downton Abbey), Nicholas Pinnock (Top Boy, Marcella), David Dawson (My Policeman, The Last Kingdom), Eve Austin (You), Geraldine James (Downton Abbey, Rogue One), Levi Brown (Payback), Freya Parks (The School of Good and Evil, Here We Go), and more.
Music will obviously be an integral part of This Town, and the soundtrack / score is by Kae Tempest and Dan Carey, which should be interesting at the very least.
There is still no word as to when This Town will premiere but it will be out on the BBC One streaming service. Knight revealed in a recent C21FM Radio interview that he’s already working on a second six-episode season of the series. Stay tuned, and check out a few photos from This Town below.
