The King of Monsters is ready for its close-up again. Godzilla will feature in new AppleTV+ series Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, as well as in a new feature film.
The series is based on Legendary’s MonsterVerse and follows the events of 2014’s Godzilla theatrical film. Kurt Russell stars as military officer Lee Shaw in present day while his son, Wyatt Russell, plays the same character in the 1950s. Here’s the Monarch synopsis:
Following the thunderous battle between Godzilla and the Titans that leveled San Francisco and the shocking revelation that monsters are real, Monarch: Legacy of Monsters tracks two siblings following in their father’s footsteps to uncover their family’s connection to the secretive organization known as Monarch.
Clues lead them into the world of monsters and ultimately down the rabbit hole to Army officer Lee Shaw (played by Kurt Russell and Wyatt Russell), taking place in the 1950s and half a century later where Monarch is threatened by what Shaw knows. The dramatic saga — spanning three generations — reveals buried secrets and the ways that epic, earth-shattering events can reverberate through our lives.
Monarch: : Legacy of Monsters was developed by Chris Black (Outcast, Star Trek: Enterprise) and Matt Fraction (Hawkeye) with Matt Shakman (Wandavision) directing the first two episodes. There’s no premiere date or trailer yet but Apple has shared a few photos, including ones with both Russells and the Big G. Those are in this post, below.
Meanwhile, there’s also a new Godzilla movie from Japan’s Toho Studios, titled Godzilla Minus One (“ゴジラ-1.0マイナスワン”), that will be the studio’s first Godzilla film to get North American distribution in eight years. It’s in theaters on December 1 and you can watch the teaser trailer for that below.
