Zsela (full name Zsela Thompson) has announced her debut album, Big For You, following 2020’s Ache of Victory EP. It comes out June 14 via Mexican Summer (pre-order), and it was made with producers Daniel Aged (Frank Ocean, Kelela) and Gabe Wax (The War On Drugs, Soccer Mommy). It also features contributions from Marc Ribot, Nick Hakim, Casey MQ and Jasper Marsalis (Slauson Malone 1).
The album features the recently-released single “Fire Excape,” as well as the just-released second single “Lily of the Nile.” It’s a lush, arresting art pop song, and it comes with a video directed by Chester Raj Anand. Of the video, Zsela says, “I had a vision of stealing a bride from the altar and it turned into a Bride and Clyde, runaway love story.” Chester adds, “So much of this video has to do with identity, and the manipulation of it. In a funny way, that’s how it felt on set. Our egos had dissolved or morphed into one harmonious expression. Zsela and I have a history of collaborating, but this instance truly felt like an evolution in the most fun and natural way. I don’t think I can be happier with how the video turned out.” Check it out below.
Zsela also announced shows happening in Seattle, San Francisco, NYC, Chicago, and LA happening this August, and she plays Pitchfork’s London festival in November. Tickets for the US dates go on sale Friday (4/26) at 10 AM local.
