One wonders if the producers of this triple bill, ’80s-centric tour, which has probably been in the works for months, were kicking themselves just a little around Thanksgiving when they realized how close they were to having “Yacht Rock: A Dockumentary: The Tour.” Two of the principal subjects of that new, very entertaining HBO documentary, Toto and Christopher Cross, will hit the road together with Michael McDonald Men at Work in July and August.
Still, this is a solid bill of artists who all had huge hits in the early ’80s. “I am thrilled about this tour,” Toto guitarist Steve Lukather shares. “Christopher and Colin have been close friends of mine for a long time. This is a tour that musically works, and brings a fresh new Summer tour package to the circuit. I could not be more thrilled an idea that germinated months ago was able to take flight and become a reality.”
The tour hits the NYC area at Holmdel, NJ’s PNC Bank Arts Center on July 25. Tickets for the tour go on sale Friday, December 13 at 10 AM local time. All dates are listed below.
There are other connections on this tour, too. Both Men at Work’s Colin Hay and Toto’s Steve Lukather and Warren Ham play in Ringo Starr and His All-Starr Band, who will be on tour in June, including NYC’s Radio City Music Hall on June 13.
Still, it would’ve been neat to have a tour where Christopher Cross could have Michael McDonald come out for backing vocals on “Ride Like the Wind,” and McDonald could have Lukather come out to play on “I Keep Forgettin’.” Maybe next year.
While we’re on the subject, very popular tribute act the Yacht Rock Revue will be on tour in early 2025, including NYC-area shows at Montclair, NJ’s Wellmont Theater on January 9, Long Island’s The Paramount on January 10 & 11, and Staten Island’s St. George Theatre on January 12.
