Winter Jazzfest 2025 happens January 9-15 at venues all over Manhattan and Brooklyn, and since the initial lineup announcement they’ve added artists, detailed Artist-in-Residence Makaya McCraven‘s four-show residency, and revealed the Manhattan and Brooklyn marathon nights.
New additions to the lineup include Matthew Shipp, Brandee Younger, Adam Birnbaum, Air Legacy Trio, and more. Check out the full 2025 lineup as it stands below, and head to the Winter Jazzfest website for the full schedule and tickets.
The Manhattan Marathon happens Friday, January 10 at Village and East Village clubs Le Poisson Rouge, City Winter, the Keith Haring Theater, the Neilma Sidney Theatre, Mercury Lounge, Zinc Bar, Nublu and The Bitter End with performances by Ganavya, Brandee Younger Trio, Vijay Iyer & Wadada Leo Smith, The Christian McBride Band (celebrating 20 years of Live At Tonic), Emma-Jean Thackray, and more.
The Brooklyn Marathon happens Saturday, January 12 at Williamsburg clubs Music Hall of Williamsburg, Brooklyn Bowl, Loove Labs, Baby’s All Right, Union Pool and Hybrid Visions with performances by Arooj Aftab, Vijay Iyer Trio, Sun Ra Arkestra, Matthew Shipp Trio, Zoh Amba Sun Ensemble, Alan Braufman, Lion Babe, Salami Rose Joe Louis, and more.

Makaya McCraven’s four shows, which include performances at both marathons, are:
- Jan. 9 at Nublu: MAKAYA McCRAVEN, THEON CROSS, BEN LAMAR GAY
- Manhattan Marathon, Jan. 10 at Le Poisson Rouge (11:15 PM): SPONTANEOUS COMPOSITION (Makaya McCraven improvises with Junius Paul, Matt Gold, Marquis Hill and Josh Johnson)
- Brooklyn Marathon, Jan. 11 at Music Hall of Williamsburg (12:30 AM): IN THE MOMENT/IN THESE TIMES (Makaya McCraven Ensemble performs arrangements of music from In the Moment for the breakthrough album’s 10-year anniversary with Junius Paul, Matt Gold, Marquis Hill, Josh Johnson, Joel Ross, more TBA)
- Jan. 14 at Public Records: INTERNATIONAL ANTHEM CELEBRATES 10 YEARS OF IN THE MOMENT WITH MAKAYA MCCRAVEN & GILLES PETERSON (A night of spontaneous composition with Makaya McCraven and musicians TBA, with DJ sets by Gilles Peterson)
Winter Jazzfest 2025 will also mark the 10th anniversary of McCraven’s album In the Moment and he says, “I’ve kind of themed my residency around that.” He adds: “The show at Public Records is an improvised, recorded set in the spirit of the In the Moment sessions. Then at Nublu it’ll be a set with Theon Cross and Ben LaMar Gay—we’ve improvised now twice before, first on-air at Worldwide FM with Gilles Peterson, and then once at an International Anthem showcase in Berlin earlier this year, which was also recorded. This show will also be recorded and marks another step toward this becoming a potential ongoing project. At the Friday Marathon, we’re going to play music from In the Moment, to some extent in the way I’ve toured it in the past, but probably also some pieces that were never arranged for the band before. The Saturday Brooklyn Marathon is with a larger band, but still an improvised set, which is rare.”
