Jonah Matranga, Doris Cellar @ Mercury Lounge
Post-hardcore veteran Jonah Matranga has been in many bands over the years (Far, New End Original, Gratitude, his own Onelinedrawing project, etc) and tonight he’s in solo mode. We’ll likely hear stuff from all over his career though, and maybe a few covers too. Opening is Freelance Whales’ Doris Cellar, who’s a big Far fan.
A$AP Rocky, Cultfever Pat Mahoney, Morgan O’Kane Susanna Raeven @ Union Pool
This unsurprisingly sold-out show is a benefit for victims of the Nepal earthquake, and if you got a ticket, things start at 6 PM and end at 11 PM.
They Might Be Giants @ Music Hall of Williamsburg
They lived in Williamsburg before a lot of people ever dared step foot on the L train, They Might Be Giants are playing a lot of shows at MHOW this year, and tonight they’ll play 2007’s The Else while also highlighting their revamped Dial-a-Song service.
Club 8, Eternal Summers, Lunchbox, The Holiday Crowd, Seabirds, Starry Eyed Cadet, Cold Beat, Sapphire Mansions @ Littlefield (NYC Popfest)
Popfest comes to a close with this day-long show featuring Sweden’s Club 8 (their first NYC show since 1999), Eternal Summers, San Francisco’s Cold Beat and lots more. Band’s start at 4:30 PM.
Cold Beat, In School, Arm Candy, OCDPP @ Silent Barn
After playing Popfest, Cold Beat will head to Silent Barn for this decidedly more punky show that is pretty solid across-the-board. OCDPP is Cassie Ramone, OJ from XRay Eyeballs and, on drums, Dee Dee of Dum Dum Girls.
Gene Ween (does Billy Joel) @ Brooklyn Bowl
While the actual Billy Joel continues his unending Madison Square Garden residency, Aaron Freeman (aka Gene Ween) will explore “his deep and abiding man-love for the music of Billy Joel. Backed by a 7 piece band of fellow Joelophiles, Gene tears through the hits, and only the hits, from the man from Oyster Bay.”
Vulture Festival
NY Magazine’s pop culture festival brings a lot of cool talks, music and comedy events to one weekend in NYC. Most events today — including a screening of Billy Eichner and Amy Poehler’s new show Difficult People — happen at Chelsea’s Milk Studios but there’s also a big comedy event at The Bell House with Brett Gelman, Chris Gethard, Jared Logan, Colin Quinn, Max Silvestri, Michelle Wolf and more.
Laura Stevenson, Slingshot Dakota, Vagabond, Double Trouble Double Dragon DJs @ Riis Park Beach Bazaar
The free daytime shows at Rockway Beach’s Riis Park Beach Bazaar continue today, and this one’s a good lineup all around of indie/punk crossover.
1349, Necrophagia, Black Anvil, Vattnet Viskar @ Saint Vitus
This is a great bill all around for black metal fans. There’s Norwegian vets 1349, the even more OG Necrophagia, local staples Black Anvil, and the atmospheric Vattnet Viskar.
D.R.I., The Casualties, Blanks 77, Enrage, The Donner Party, Gravity Well, The Holy Terror @ Starland Ballroom
Crossover thrash pioneers DRI played NYC last night, and tonight they’re just outside of the city with NYC street punk vets The Casualties and more.
CANCLELED: Body Count, Stray From the Path, Suffocation @ The Paramount
Ice-T’s rap metal band Body Count came back in a sorta-surprisingly big way last year with a new album (Manslaughter) and some live shows that got great feedback. Tonight they take over Long Island with hometown death metal heroes Suffocation.
