Twin Temple, the self-proclaimed “satanic doo-wop” duo who were recently dropped from opening for Charley Crockett for their use of satanic imagery, have announced a new album, Doomed Lovers, which will be out October 9 via their own Pentagrammaton Records. The album was produced by Shooter Jennings — who has also produced Crockett’s last four albums — and features a 37-piece orchestra.
The duo are not exactly doo-wop, but they are steeped in ’50s rock n’ roll and country: think Roy Orbison, Patsy Cline, The Everly Brothers, with an obvious dark romantic undercurrent that puts them in the same sonic orbit at The Handsome Family. They’ve shared Doomed Lovers‘ gorgeous, string-drenched title track. “This is the philosophical centerpiece of the album,” Twin Temple say, “a theatrical and confessional take on all or nothing love, the dark side of devotion and centuries old mythic literary Romantic themes. It longs for a love so enduring and eternal that it ultimately consumes, obliterates, and drives one to madness and death. At its core, it asks the question – ‘What happens when your lover dies?’”
Twin Temple are not too satanic for Danzig, who is taking them out on tour in September. Those dates are listed below.
They also got an offer after the Charley Crockett brouhaha from Jack White to open his LA show, and the group’s Alexandra and Zachary James talked to Rolling Stone about all this stuff. They said they have no beef with Charley and said his decision to not have them on the tour “is artistic freedom in its own right,” and that it came down to “satanic imagery,” which has been central to Twin Temple’s artwork since they began in 2017.
“I felt like it would have been a really cool statement on Charley’s part about music being able to bring people from different backgrounds together,” Alexandra told Rolling Stone. “I feel like music is maybe the hands-down most beautiful and powerful art form to bring people together. The reason why we were so excited about these shows was to build some of these bridges. Charley is a really talented artist, and I think we share so much musical DNA: our love of everything from Roy Orbison to Buddy Holly, Waylon Jennings, Loretta Lynn, Burrito Brothers, the blues. So, we’re a little sad. It felt like maybe it’s reinforcing a divide between artists.”
Rolling Stone also asked them if they were really Satanists. “Satan is a metaphor for exploring all of these things in our art,” Alexandra said. “It’s the images that have always resonated with us. For me, growing up a mixed-race woman [of Korean and British descent], first generation in America, I’ve always felt a little bit like an outsider. And Satan’s the original outlaw, right? He’s a rebel angel. He’s the one who questioned authority, fought for himself, refused to bow down or conform, and was like non serviam. That was a metaphor that resonated very strongly with me.” She also added, “It’s really fun to go shopping for a human skull and a Ronettes record in the same day, and we get to do that with our band.”
As for the Jack White shows, Twin Temple says the radius clause with the Danzig tour may keep that from happening but they’re trying to work it out. “It’s really up to our Lord and Savior Glenn and his camp and the promoters how they want to do that.”
